I am sick of PMing people today (I remember why I stopped making SPAM threads at HC), so I did this.

Tell me about your Shredmaster-based box of distortion again, IIRC it had knobs and switches ...

Yo, the one i built is like dis:

Basically, the less/more switch boosts the max gain level a bit, makes it more edgy.

The high/low switch changes the voicing of the thing. The stock Shredmaster ("Low" setting) is a kind of really dark sounding pedal. The "High" setting makes it much much brighter and generally more pissed off sounding, kinda sorta like the difference between an Engl(dark almost muddy) and a 5150(mids almost in excess).

The footswitch on the right is the bypass, and the one on the left, switches the way the gain control is wired, basically making it behave as though the gain control is on zero. There is a bit of volume bump when you switch it from zero to full up, but it is useful to me.

I had sort of halfdrawn plans to do a silly version, that could switch into some/all of the other Marshall pedals, but it got a little too silly, and in the end i ditched it once it hit something like twenty switches that would need to be on the top of the thing. At that point, and as much as about $2.50 per switch, it would be cheaper to build two (or more) pedals.

 Boomstick.

That seems really cool though. that is the HD enclosure too I see. So say I wanted a Boomstick, are there any changes to the design you have been thinking about since building that one? Beside the Marshall superpedal ...

What was that pedal you made with awesome paint? I dont remember what it was so you should post pics of all your pedals you made. I wanna buy it!!!!!!!!

Only a simpler version of the silly pedal. Maybe some clipping section changes, probably some sort of simplified switching to allow it to work more like the Bluesbreaker (i.e. low gain stuff) or possibly an almost NO gain switch that would make it work more like an MXR Microamp sort of thing. Also maybe some sort of rejiggering of the tone section, to allow some different voicings. Or potentially a totally different tone section that could act like a couple different types of tonestack with some switches.

Basically, i like the circuit, and i like the other Marshall pedals, so i am probably going to fuck with them a bit more.

For myself, i want a pedal that does the MXR Microamp thing, but with an EQ section. But then i want to be able to switch in enough stuff to make it an overdrive like the Bluesbreaker, and then to switch in a shit tonne more gain and make it like the Shredmaster, or the Guv'nor/Riot. Basically so that i can take one pedal, and set it up for a bunch of different drive uses. No good reason really. Except that, when i live in a refrigerator box, i may only be able to have one dirt pedal, and then this would be it. :red:

I just don't know how much of it is practical to try to cram into one box/circuit. Like a two effect box might make more sense, i.e. rather than trying to swissarmy knife the shredmaster up, just to do a lightly modded Shredmaster or Guv'nor, but to also cram in a lower gain pedal like the Bluesbreaker or Microamp, as a separate effect, in the same box.

I like the IDEA of the swiss army box, because of the similarities that the pedals share, but there are enough differences that it really doesn't become a very elegant solution to be able to switch between them(fucking twenty switches!), so much as a nerd accomplishment/Marshall tribute. I.e. it makes a better concept (all the marshall pedals in one box!) perhaps, than it would be as an actual pedal. :idk:

[Also, i have to change the name of it, as another DIY dude sells a kit for another pedal called Boomstick. I am thinking something along the lines of Chain Gun Arm. Actually, that is just the only one i can remember at the moment. I have a list somewhere.]

I like where this idea is going.

Just throwing this out there, and granted I imagine the box would be huge, but say do a three footswitch deal with a Microamp, a Shredmaster and a Bypass switch? Is that kind of design even possible without being entirely impractical?

Hmm, i dunno. A lot of my builds are just ghetto finished at the moment, meaning: not painted at all, or just spraypainted. :idk:

I generally build them too quick and dirty to actually paint/finish them for myself at all. I just build usually to see what the hype is all about for a pedal, or just what a certain design really sounds like. I generally just get them stuck together, try them out, and if i don't like them, i just take them back apart and build something else out of them. A lot of my shit is just built in temporary boxes as a result, because i just can't afford to have enough boxes and jacks and switches to have all of the circuits i have built(probably 100+ now?) in proper boxes.

All of that extra shit is what actually costs the money in a pedal. The circuit board itself is hardly ever more than $5-10 worth of shit. The box/jacks/switches/pots/LEDs/battery snaps/DCjacks shit is like $50-60 of junk. So like five grand to box my shit all up? :red: I am going to be building ghetto for a long time instead, i think.

Depending on how it went, probably three switches on a BB box(like your big muff) would be fine. I would leave out the battery(i.e. just a DC jack) because one battery doesn't always work that awesome for two pedals at once, and it would free up space inside the BB box for the other shit. It would be tricky, but i think probably i could fit it all in there.

ACTUALLY. It would only really need two switches.

Like this:
Image

Which is a Timmy into a Box of Rock. Basically both switches are bypasses. They are close enough together that you can click them bofe at once with your foots. So both off, or each one on separately, or both on at once(i have the timmy boosting the BOR).

OR, if you have one of them on and one of them off, you can click both buttons at once, and reverse the situation, so the other is on, and the other other is off. It is practical/efficient/ghetto/awesome.

If you mix a low gainer in with the shredmaster, you wouldn't need the gain footswitch i have on my shredmaster either.
