One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say.

Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

i was contemplating what it meant.... when someone says someone is smart, what do they mean? is it measured by success? by amount of knowledge ie book smart? experience? wisdom? capacity for knowledge? ability to learn? ability to think? wtf does it mean? am i smart? is insert name here smart? why is such a loosely defined word used so rampantly? i was always known for being brilliant by my teachers in elementary school, now people doubt my intelligence, and am rarely noticed by my teachers except in my sophomore classes, but most of them are idiots anyways. why is that? i don't understand. am i still smart? was i ever smart? wtf does this madness mean !!!!!! i'm tired of being doubted.... people assume i am stupid and it angers me to the point to where i wonder if i really am stupid. i don't have much knowledge as i don't read anymore on like academic shit but i do know alot about things i am interested in. but anyone who is not lazy can learn these things. so is that really what makes someone smart? this is stressing me out... i want to be looked at as intelligent, brilliant, not just be looked at as such but to BE intelligent, to be brilliant. how do i achieve this? how do i become what one will call "smart?" why am i always doubted? when will it end?

you have to clarify what type of smart you speak of. If somebody just says "they're smart" I'd be like, well obviously you're a terrible judge because you haven't defined what you're talking about, and therefore I do not believe you. But of course, I would vocalize this as "why do you say that?" or "how so?" or "in what way?". Shit needs clarification in such an open language like English.
