Nah it's just played as loud as possible so it doesn't sound very human I think. The woman that wrote this was romantically involved with shastokovich and apparently he quoted her themes

Noted. Once again it's late, so Dead Can Dance for me at the moment. I kinda have a love/hate thing for atonalism as it's easier said than done. I have little tolerance for overly intellectualized "art" as such things can tend to be. I do however love my dissonance and noise when it says something.

The Shostakovitch connection intrigues me. I am a fan, even if I do kinda see him as a more overtly structured Mahler Lite.

Okay, I put that on for the hell of it and so far it's the straight br00tz, true dat. The rhythmic severity of the thing I think is what makes it. The chords in the bottom octaves of the piano hit with that incessant quarter-note rhythm are proper violence.
