Seriously, like normal cliche news-headlining form would prescribe what, something like "Wild Elephants Terrorize Town" or "Local Authorities Subdue Loose Elephant"

Cows: slow and stupid enough that primitive peoples could build fences around them and they'd be none the wiser. The largest prey animal I can think of off the top of my head. Not as cool (read: mean) as buffaloes. Their primary evolutionary advantage seems to be being tasty, which is not much of an advantage, all told.

Elephants have them beat on every level. If you need a sacred animal, they're up there. I mean, we don't have mammoths or sabre-toothed cats or gigantopithicuses or baluchitheriums or allosauruses or dimetrodons or the like anymore, so if you gotta has a sacred something I suppose they make the cut. They're smart, they're gigantic, they can break things, and they have awesome noses. What's not to like? Oh, and tusks, which are like horns or antlers, but not quite the same.
