Tasty ass guitar playing. This is the best thing The Strokes have done in a long time. |

![]() I really enjoy how much they utilize the fact that they have two guitarists. |

Define "indie rock." I hear the term used to describe countless different sounding bands. What do they mean when they say indie rock? Btw good song

It's mad gay, brohanski. And that's all you need to know. It's certainly never had anything to do with fun things like Joy Division or fuzz pedals or was ever any extension of alt rock proper and really just a term that developed when "alternative" no longer meant anything versus post-grunge brohammer bullshit like Creed or whatnot that somehow managed to appropriate "alternative" as... Huh, that's true. Nothing is 'alternative' these days. *sigh* |

To be less douchey: it used to mean something. It's basically now what "alternative" was in that it means "things that are influenced by things that came from things that used to be underground". |

Eh, the strokes write tastey riffs but I think the guys in Modest Mouse, Silversun Pickups and Minus the Bear have overall more interesting things going on. There's also bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Built to Spill who have gone the way of jam band guitar leads as time went on. Good example of Indie Rock guitar, but not the best IMO. |

Since MM added Johnny Marr to the lineup, their dual-guitar riffage has gotten slick: Oh yeah and Broken Social Scene does interesting things, and also pulls out double basses sometimes. Also, best music video ever: |

Much like the occasional death metal band that I despise, the Strokes are a band who I'd like to see perish in the manner their name describes. |

![]() I'm not the biggest strokes fan either. I like their guitarists and what they do, they really are good riff writers, but I really can't handle an entire album of them. |

Not really a big fan of the Strokes at all. For guitar pair stuff, i would say Modest Mouse (i like the early stuff like: This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About), Fugazi (my favorites are probably Red Medicine, End Hits, and The Argument), and Archers Of Loaf (Vs The Greatest Of All Time, The Speed Of Cattle, Vee Vee). They are a bit different though, i have a different sort of ideal for two guitars fighting. A more direct precedent to the way that the Strokes play might be something like Television's Marquee Moon. It lacks the luded-out jackass of a singer that Julian Casablancas provides though... Other swell two guitar indie rock: Sonic Youth. The early stuff like Sister and Daydream Nation has one flavour that i like, kind of walls of textural strummed semi-dissonance. Some of the later stuff like A Thousand Leaves has a slightly different variety where the guitars are cleaner and more forward and seem to interact with each other more. The first half of that record is actually pretty cool. I dunno, i could go on a real long time about stuff i like. I have to cut myself off somewhere.

Oh yes I could go on about Sonic Youth for days. Actually, I didn't even include them in the list out redundancy, along with The Pixies and Pavement. |

I refuse to recognize Sonic Youth or the Pixies as indie since they started in the 80s.
