I likes it too. It's still definitely very obviously Opeth, which is cool. The guitar tone is different. All clean vocals, more keys. I can, listening to this, hear this as a metal Opeth song from the riffs and progressions. I can hear how they themselves would have previously done this, it just would have been sonically different. The guitar tone and arrangement (not of the song structure, the instrumentation) are the big differences.

I'm okay with this. It's a good direction for them to go. It's fairly different for them in that it's still rocking pretty hard but it's not metal. It is exactly what it was described as, '70's style progressive rock. That snare rules, by the by. I will pay money for this to get it in a real class sounding format.

I assume that was Mikael taking the solo? Sounded like his phrasing, and I liked the trem work; that's a different touch for him.

I think it does. I mean once they had really blown up and were having lineup changes and this and that I feel like their music wasn't as authentic. On an intellectual level it just seemed like they were dicking around with a couple new sounds while simultaneously trying their best to deliver what folks expect from them. On the feely level of things Ghost Reveries and Watershed certainly didn't affect me like the stuff from their "classic lineup(s)", which at one point was the most important music in the world to me.

So any new direction is a good one, IMO. I would be mighty disappoint if they just kept with the same vibe.

I can see this, actually, even having listened to those records to death. I think the New Olde Sounds were really what they were reaching for, and it's mostly where those records deliver for me, where they hit upon something they hadn't touched before. On occasion it was the heavy bits, but even then it was where they'd take them somewhere else for the most part, either in weird by sticking a Jon Lord organ or something really off-kilter or something or the odd section where they'd get choppy-rhythmic-downtuned heavy because it was an odd vibe for them.

Vibe or whatever you want to use as a synonym is really, I think, their thing as a band, and why, like few heavier bands do, they work as a non-metal band playing lighter (sonically) stuff that isn't Metal Ballads. I think that's probably a big part of why I like them; they're almost a sort of anti-metal, just a band doing their thing, and part of the sound of that thing happens to be influenced by some old-school DM/BM.

In a way, it's part of what appeals to me about KMFDM as well. Kind of an odd comparison on the surface, but it makes sense in a way- they'd be a genuinely good thrash band complete with shredding without the electronics, but the electronics are the focal point. Just a band making its noise.

The more I listen to this, the more I like it. That's definitely not a bad thing.
