Post subject:  Oedipus the king and existentialism?

Alright guys, long time no see, but anyways, I had an idea and I'm wondering if it's worth pursuing in an essay of mine.

You all know the story of Oedipus The King, correct? Well, if not, a brief summary;

Oedipus is the king of Thebes, who is cursed with a plague and many are dying. Oedipus sends Creon, his wife's brother to an Oracle to find out what they have to do to stop the plague. The oracle tells Creon that the plague is ravaging them because the murderer of Laius is among them. For the plague to leave Thebes, the murderer must be either killed or exiled. Well, what Oedipus doesn't know is that he is actually the murderer of Laius (who is also his father :P) and when he took the throne and married his wife, he also married his own mother. Oedipus hears the prophecy that he would do this and escapes from Corinth, and along the way, kills some men. One of them happened to be Laius, but he didn't know it. Long story short, he finds out, and exiles himself after his wife (and mother) Jocasta kills herself.

TL;DR
So, reading Sophocles' quote that says something along the lines of "man is the cause of his own adversity" made me think of existentialism. Oedipus created his own hardship buy himself choosing to murder the men and take the throne, not fate. He himself made the prophecy come true. So, am I wrong in saying that Oedipus the king is an early example of a writing with existentialist themes? I asked my teacher but he didn't know, so I came to you wise fucks; is this idea completely stupid, or am I on to something and should use this for my thesis.

I have to be honest, I don't have the slightest clue as to what "existentialist" means :red:

Don't worry, it's only the most important movement in Western philosophy from the 20th century. You can be forgiven.

I'm so glad I'm not on any kind of drugs right now. That was bad (good) enough even sober.
