Jon Bon Jovi has always done plenty of blow, still does party hard. And he's always cultivated this image of being a family-oriented hard rock man. On Ally McBeal and shit. Anyway I have always dug Richie Sambora's playing. |

Awesome raw punk rock tone. JCM900 I believe? Wicked bass tone as well. edit - and this is usually the kind of tone I seem to go towards when I'm playing |

I like them when they are broken. (very likely not even a guitar. also, a much better noise in "real", non-youtube, form) (the impatient can skip to 3:40ish...) Also: fucking crankedbusted ac30s and lasersharp brightleads: I mean, i like the standard shit also: Heartwork, Malcom Young, Richie Blackmore's Marshall Majors(and John Lord's for that matter), Hendrix's JTM blasting the Fillmore East on Band Of Gypsys, Pete Townshend's kerranging hiwatts on live at leeds, etc etc etc. But what i really enjoy, are the ones that are terrible/wrong/unpleasant. But the perfect noises for wherever they wound up. You can't replace James Williamson's guitar sound with like... fucking Tom Delonge's; it would ruin everything. You can't replace Eno's broken Moog with one that functions properly; it would ruin everything(and actually a note included with the synth when sent in for repair at Moog at the time indicated pretty much the same, something like "make it work again, but don't fix the broken oscillator, it needs that"). I definitely like the broken ones the most. |

I would also add, that at least 75% of my favorite non-broken guitar sounds, are actually, guitar-and-BASS, sounds. Many of them are of the heavy-like-seven-tons-of-shit variety: [Though it is worth noting, that none of them sound right on youtube.] |

hmm you just brough up a point actually, I think Tom Delonge's tone is the one I always wanted. On Enema of the State it's fucking perfect. |

This is relevant. The couple conventionally nice rock tones I posted have gigantic bass that's just as much a part of the whole deal. It's rare you run into a really nice actual-pleasant one that doesn't have the support down there. Of the ones you posted (and they are all unfuckwithable, we know that and accept this as gospel truth, knowing what rawk guitar "should" sound like, being from the western world), only Heartwork doesn't have that, really; it follows in the unfortunate metal tradition of Bury The Bass. The Stooges thing is totally valid- if those records sounded "good" in the conventional sense they'd lose so much. Daniel Ash, Steve Albini, Adrian Belew, etc.- if they had Malcolm Young's tone- which is awesome- that would totally ruin it. Like, the guitar sounds on this are awesome: Adrian Belew and Trent Reznor. Not nice in the conventional sense at all. It wouldn't even be silly with normal tones- it would be impossible. Of course, then you'll have someone like Duane Denison, playing noisy stuff with a pretty nice tone. So it sorta shoots both ways. |
