Are you just looking for jazz in general or is totally apeshit a prerequisite? |

Not exactly like your criteria, but instrumental jazz fusion by Steve DiGiorgio is fucking awesome anyway. |

Sounds a lot like bebop style jazz there. My favorite dood in bebop: Another awesome dood who played it: If it is quick piano based stuff you seek, then there is always Oscar Peterson too: In troof there are a lot of jazz doods who play in the style. I personally prefer the older stuff to more recent stuff like the OP(though the stuff that that guy recorded with Joshua Redman is also pretty good). I prefer the old stuff though, it seems rawer to me, dirtier or something. For piano, Thelonious Monk is a complete badass(get Genius Of Modern Music V1 and V2). For saxomophone, i like Charlie Parker for his crazy phrasing(almost anything is good, i like the huge Dial Masters two disc thing especially though). For bass dudes, Oscar Pettiford is pretty awesome(i like the Sextet stuff, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Sextet-Oscar-Pett ... pd_sim_m_2 (It is generally slower paced than the OP, awesome bass player though). ![]() If none of those sound like what you are looking for, say a little more about what you like in that first video.

Chris has the right of it. The old bebop stuff. Those guys rip something fierce. The record I posted, the first track, Cherokee, sounds awfully similar to what you'd put up. I put it on 'cause I'm a Mingus fan. All those guys are badasses and affiliated with the bebop scene. Charlie Christian, too, if you want some early guitar-y stuff. Oh, and here's all of A Love Supreme: Good audio too for Youtoob. It's an amazing piece. I have a live version kicking around somewhere too. (Granted there is minimal overdubbing here- Coltrane did dub his own backup vocal at the end of the first section, which I find moderately humorous. it's them throwing down in Rudy Van Gelder's studio.) It might be mellower in mood than what yer looking for, but it has the advantage of being brilliant. Some of these guys were really great melodists when they weren't shredding it up. And they do throw down here quite a bit. All these guys rip, if not all of the time. But there's a good bit of it. A significant percentage. The balance of a lot of these older records is gonna seem weird, gotta warn you. Expect hard-panned mono drums (like here, though it's in stereo- bass and piano up the center, sax to the left, drums on the right) or the whole thing in mono. Some of these, especially the Van Gelder recordings, sound fucking awesome though. Lots of old classical and jazz recordings do. |

All of the stuff in here is ridiculous. And I am finding myself taking something of an interest in it. Especially that Charlie Parker video, reminds me of Steve Howe's guitar phrasing and a little bit of early Fripp as well. Were there any dudes shredding archtop on dis bepop shiz? |

For the hell of it, this is about as old-school as electric guitar gets. Charlie Christian. Live, 1941. The tempo here is more relaxed than the bebop stuff- though he's considered an important precursor to it. Probably the first really important electric guitarist. Some of Les Paul's old stuff is pretty monstrous. Here's Wes Montgomery shredding without a pick playing a Coltrane tune: It's really, once you get what its on about, really excellent stuff. It certainly informs my playing quite a bit though I'm fairly bad at actually playing it. Really good jazz is anything but boring and overly intellectualized. Some of the old-school stuff is more structured and melodic, too. (Charles Mingus' Mingus Ah Um is a great record. Goodbye Porkpie Hat has been famously re-interpreted for guitar. Very melodic stuff on there.)
