Not that I know of, for that, specifically. Nothing quite as extreme. There are Toontrack libraries that have jacked-up normal drum sounds, but I don't know of anything else specific for that. I Native Instruments soooo much. The best textures and atmospheres. Absynth, Absynth Twilights and Kore are all over my stuff.

What do film score producers like zimmer use? I dont want to believe that they manually record every tom and hit sound on their own.... contemplating on buying this. |

The guys with those kind of budgets probably do, honestly. Or, rather, have engineers to do the dirty work while they write the parts. And you see people like Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross doing soundtrack work these days. These are the people who make the shit we use, or have unlimited access to whatever they want. Even the instrumentation that winds up on big-budget film scores, they've been using weird shit for a long time as an effect. (As an example, I think there's contrabass trombone in the score for Tombstone. Think a giant trombone that's essentially a tuba with a slide in terms of range- 5-string bass range) If they have the budget for a real orchestra and foley, they get all sorts of fun stuff- and no doubt lots of it falls on the mix engineer, as soundtrack work is a bit different than traditional orchestral recording. Lots more spot mics, and well... mixing. Also, overdubs. Tons of tracks. But stuff on smaller budgets or for TV or whatnot, 's the same shit that the rest of us have- or have if we can pay for or boost it. And what the really big guys use for writing tools, I don't know specifically- probably what you'd guess- workstation synths and sample libraries. Because I'm a total sap, I adore Memoirs Of A Geisha, and the behind the scenes stuff about the soundtrack was really neat. But when yer on the level to get Itzhak Perlman and Yo Yo Ma to be your featured players throughout the film, you can get whatever you want. Also, being John Williams helps. Though he may be so old-school he writes on piano, I don't know. |
