Re-skimming the article, one of the guys does reference a Joe Meek trick of recording piano halfspeed to make it sound like a harp. I am guessing that is it right there.
I don't see much on their vocal setup though. Sounds like a proper plate reverb, but knowing that they recorded themselves on a mac with Logic, i wonder if it might just be a swell sounding plugin with some deliberate tweaks to go for an older sound.
Which issue is it in? I'll have to czech out the article as I'm not remembering them off the toppa my head.
Re: the vocals, the 'verb is probably the easiest to duplicate, but just the timbre of the thing, whether it's the mic itself into an oldass Altec or Shure pre or whatever, that's what I'm the most curious about. I like that softened top end they have going on.
I've been trying to nail a '60s-ish sound for some backing vocals in a few places on the Garda LP* and I'm not sure how to go about it. To get my own band to sound how they should, I really need to step outside my usual recording/mixing aesthetic.
*- Of the current suggestions for the title, I'm leaning toward "The Sound Of Science" myself.

'twas in the may/june issue with the yellow and black images of various magnetic layouts of cinema audio formats. Issue before the most recent i guess?
The band, Temples, is listed on the cover, third from last.

Might be the best thing in their whole discography:

Always loved the aggressive pan on this. There is pretty much no guitar at all in the right channel aside from the intro and solo. On a Van Halen Record.
Classy album opener.

I've been getting into my humbucker strat again lately, and am considering getting that overpriced EVH Frankenstein humbucker. Because I'm into the brown sound and all that. Of course I'll just sound like me if I get it...
