Lately I've really been into the jazz brass instrument phrasing transferred over to guitar concept and realized I don't have as many examples of this sound in my music library as I wish I did. Basically, what I am talking about is: Early KC/Robert Fripp psychedelic jazzfusion retardedness with batshit crazy guitars that sound like odd meter, sporadic bird calls. The other example, and probably the one I am leaning towards most is a lot of what Steve Howe is doing on Yes' Close To The Edge (with the intro excluded). A little bit more restrained and less... avant garde than Fripp or Holdsworth but still very interesting guitar playing. Lots of colorful chord voicings that strikes a balance between a lead and rhythm guitar player. It is hard for me to explain exactly what I mean and to describe a sound but let's see if you gents can't give it a shot.. |

First thing I thought of when I got into reading this was Holdsworth's 'saxophone' guitar. But that's basically shred territory... |

Sounds a little like you are describing my least favorite guitar sound of all. Check out Mahavishnu Orchestra. |

Yargh, I am not huge on super shreddy guitar music for whatever reason. Stuff that is like, smoke and mirrors shred, like a quick melodic legato lick in the middle of a more simple riff or single note phrase that serves both the purpose of being catchy and adding some flashy bullshit factor is sort of my bag, in terms of both my writing style and preferred listening. |

That was not the sort of answer I was looking for ( ), so I think I might have communicated what I intended incorrectly.. Hold up, let me get an actual concrete example.

Okay. Listening to Birds of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra, maybe this is more of what I was talking about than I thought. This is actually really fucking cool.. |

Nah, i didn't mean that unkindly. From how you put that, i think you might like Mahavishnu Orchestra. Their drummer, Billy Cobham, was a complete and total epic badass, also. |

I do actually like this, though it is a little too jam-y and not enough song-y, but a few of the basic elements are there. I still think the Steve Howe comparison works better though, as it is sort of the same ragingfuzzbirds guitar attack but more restrained and.. structured? As there is band going on there, not just a vehicle for some hot shit guitarist. |
