Maybe using online tabletop software like Map Tool?

http://www.rptools.net/index.php?page=maptool

Or maybe Shadowrun.

I really want to play D&D good ol' pen and paper style but no one I know is interested in playing.

I would actually probably be down, yo. Maps-based character system would be sick.

I'd probably be down if I have the time. I haven't played in years.

Well evidently there is a few formats we could use, from simply post-to-play all the way to something like maptool which lets you upload macros to do a lot of the number crunching and rule-keeping stuff.

We would need to choose a DM, and decide on what we are going to play (game, module and etc.)

I have never played before and I know most of us have not, so we could start pretty slow, and since all of us are busy we should pretty much expect a snail-pace to the game. But, it would let us flex some creative muscles and I'm totally down for bending rules for imaginative shenanigans.

If we go D&D (or any other table top) we need to decide on which game/edition to play.

So I am thinking we start at D&D 4th ed. because it seems to pretty user-friendly for teh noobs.

There are a few module to be found here: http://www.dungeonmastering.com/campaig ... adventures

We could also veer from the D&D path and try Shadow Run, or play D&D with modern rules (at first glance the Amethyst rules are the closest to the d20 Modern on 4th Ed. or we could just use the Star Wars Saga rules and create our own setting).

Since it is a casual game I don't know if trying to create our own rules would be best, so probably sticking to 4th ed. for a few modules at least would be a good idea.

Shit, I might even be willing to buy the 4th ed. books (or acquire them by other means) if we get this going. I'm tempted to say I would DM but I only have a basic idea of what I would be doing. But then again, none of us (aside from snaxie) have any idea what we are doing.

Also, if we DO decide to get this going, might I suggest we open up a Gaming forum, with Video, Tabletop and Maps Games (on-going games like the one in this thread) subforums? They'd be supah slow but it would keep this nerdy shit out of the main forums, and we can make the Maps Games subforum password protected for players only. I'd even moderate it :D

ok - Our own Snaxie has played before as well, although he admits it has been a long time so he could probably help out. But we get a few people interested I'll make you a forum.

K, so what I did was download maptool-1.3.b87.zip: http://www.rptools.net/download/zip/maptool-1.3.b87.zip

Then I got the rest of the tool set here (skip the maptools download): http://www.rptools.net/index.php?page=launch

Then I went to this forum to look for D&D 4e Campaign Frameworks: http://forums.rptools.net/viewforum.php?f=58

And I got this framework, which explains the process: http://forums.rptools.net/viewtopic.php ... 77#p174977

Discuss?

How many folks we need to get this started? I will edit this thread to make it a signup thing/who's interested and sticky it. If it looks like we get this going I or Snaxie can make a forum for it.

I'll give it a shot.

We would need 4-5 to people at least.

I'll play. I might nominate you (Devin) to DM though. :red:

Re: systems, d20 and its variants are okay with me. Last I played I ran my own system that a friend and I collaborated on. We mostly did 2nd Ed. AD&D over the years; that's what I'm the most familiar with.

Given the Maps Wiki, Bestiary, etc.- all the insane shit we've come up with over the... Years? :hypno: I figure it'll go pretty well. I mean, you can run it as a straight-up hack-and-slash dungeon crawl a la Diablo or something, but the improv acting/bullshitting aspect of it is the bestest part, IMO, especially given the characters are perpetually in some sort of danger, as is the nature of the thing.

Also, as DM, remember to bend the rules, fudge dice rolls and generally be a scheming bastard, not out of malice or a desire to get the players killed but to see what you can get them to do. Also the best part.

K I can DM, and I'm all down for rule-bendery and such shenanigans in the name of good times.

I'll look into the variety of campaigns and frameworks people have built for MapTool over the years for a decent rule framework, then come up with sumtin' special for the maps folk over the weekend. Then we can start discussing characters.

I've never participated in such a thing before, but if I stop being one of the cool kids by not participating I guess I'll join :red:

Only the In Progress forum should be password locked, the Gaming and Tabletop forums should be open to post in freely.

If you go to the gaming forum, I have posted all of the necessary books and materials you will need to play.

We have a good campaign setting chosen out, now it's time to start creating characters.

Whoever else wants in should probably get in while the getting's good.

Not that we can't have you mysteriously poof in out of nowhere in a cloud of smoke or something. Or, more realistically, the ever-popular "you meet the rest of them in a tavern". Because these things always seem to start in bars. But still.
