I know a few people here wouldn't mind to take a peak http://www.badcatamps.com/hot-cat-30-r/ http://www.badcatamps.com/the-lynx/ supposedly a single-ended 100w? Class A/D seems kinda fishy... http://www.badcatamps.com/amplifiers/bobcat-100/ |

interesting. abe had a mini cat we cracked open. never seen so much shit inside an amp that small-- thing was packed with way too much shit. and no matter how we dialed it, it never sounded very good for all that money. there was only three or four knobs on it-- so the chances of us finding NO decent sounds would be slim, and it was on a well broken in cab or two. we, however, did not. i puzzled am at bad cat's popularity. i worry about my tooth enamel in their presence. and i do mean PRESENCE. |

Hmm. Solidstate-based map sounds oddinteresting to me. Basically like a superexpensive Marshall Valvestate? I wonder how that will go. I like that they put the guts up of all of them. In troof, i have most of them already from somewhere else, but really, i feel like all map companies should publish unfuckedwith gutshots as a rule. As to the sound of the Badcats in general, i think they are kind of an acquired taste. I tend to really enjoy all of them, myself. I also tend to run amps pretty brightly though. So i probably just generally get along with the way they are voiced.

I had a hell of a time dialing in the gain channel on the Hot Cat; I couldn't really coax anything I liked out of it because of the top end. Oddly, I like them from all the recordings I've heard. The clean channel was glorious though.

Does sound purty decent to me. Those funky octal pre-tubes do have a certain radness to them. Now for myself, i am not necessarily the biggest fan ever of poweramp distortion. So in theory, i *could* get along rather well with a class D powermap. And in theory, it could make both recording and gigging a somewhat simpler affair, volume-wise. Though it is worth noting, that in practice i absolutely fucking HATED the Valvestate amps, and pretty much every other thing that i ever tried that had tubey pres into SS powers. However, the other way(SS into tube) worked quite solidly for the olde Music Man amps... And these new class D shits do seem vastly superior to whatever the hell the old power stages were based on, also. So, i retain optimism, anyhow. |

How do they manage to get 100w out of that thing with just one 6v6? ![]() Does the Class A/D thing mean it's a single-ended class A map with a Class D SS power stage in series after it? |

Clever actually. It is just a single ended amp, probably 5-8w, maximum. Then, they take the output of that, probably via a line-out sort of deal, and feed it into a powerful Class D solidstate power amp. So with the "Unleash" off, you have a simple Single-ended 5w amp. But when you click it on, it inserts the thing into the (super clean, super loud) class D amp, which means that you can crank the bejeezus out of the 6SL7/12AX7/6V6 and use the class D as an attenuator, ORas a BigLoudermerizer. Pretty SMRT. If it sounds that good IRL, that is. |

I like this idea. A lot. I've liked the class D bass rigs I've heard (and the one I used to own); I can't recall seeing a guitar one yet though- until now. I'd like to try one. Not that I can afford one, but I would like to try one. |

Yarr, i was actually thinking of something halfsimilar when i met that electroharmonix 44 caliber thing: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifie ... rc=3WFRWXX I was thinking more of just feeding it with a highish gain normal tubepreamp though. Could rehouse the parts in a normal (but relatively tiny) headshell and potentially have something kind of badass in a very small and lightweight package. |

Use the Bad Cat tube preamp pedal for irony's sake. |

I was thinking like a two channely Vox-and-Soldano sort of thing. Probably could make some crrzy shit happen with three 12AX7s and a relay. |

That would be interesting. I assume the two channels would be completely independent circuits? |

Yarr. The thing i actually started to draw out was pretty ridiculous, and i don't even actually know if the switching would have been technically feasible. But, i haven't thrown my notes for it away yet, so maybe some day i will find out.

The bobcat does sound really nice! Very smart build on their part. Light, portable, small amp feel at fuck you wattage. Instead of choking down 100w (which has resulted in meh results across many companies), it amplifies 5-8 watts up to 100w (like a built in PA). 28 pounds makes it the perfect gigging amp. I have been able to get nice sounds out of the kitty. It is kinda unique and decently bright in its nature and you really have to play with the presence and treble knobs to get it where you want to. Definitely an amp that sounds great in a mix. I'm not sure what made them so popular, most people seem not to like them enough to justify the price. Maybe the fact that they are basically good sounding higher gain Vox/Matchless makes them intriguing? Is it just me or do most of those resistors (on most of their amps) look kinda big ? like 1w big? |

yazzuh.. that was my experience too. i played a coupla hot cats and that mini cat, and one other. all of them had a preamp bypass cleans which were spectactular sounding and worth the price of the amp, and then there was the other channel, which by my best divinations, seemed to be made from a broken rat pedal with a stale battery and the filter cranked all the way up with a treble boost circuit added for bad measure. i will totally get behind this 100 watter though. it looks like a 'normal' 2 12ax7 preamp circuit-- mebbe that 6sn7 is there to act as a 'power amp emulator octalizer'.. i wouldn't be entirely surprised. i've seen headphone amps that use 'em as power tubes- and you could probably get its output well under 2v-- which depending on the load- i'd bet that class d amp could take as input voltage just like a cd player. tre tre smart. i hope other amp companies give this a whirl-- i'd be inclined to leave tube amps for something that flexible if it genuinely sounds good, although BC has scairt me away with their tooth grater gain sounds.. if that were fix't though... wonder if they'd make a head? |
