Post From no gigs to...
4 in just a weekend. Well the band I was occasionally sitting in with decided that it's too much fun with the 5 of us, plus I got them 2 gigs at a local place. Then once I was invited in the band I called the guy from the other band I had an audition for, told him I was going to pull out since I had the other gig. He said too bad, and said, "you're the guy who plays guitar too, right? Can I keep your number, because we're probably going to add a second guitar and in case your thing doesn't work I'll call you." So I went about my day, then called him back and said I would come down to the audition anyway to jam, and he was thankful as he hadn't heard back from the other guy that was going to audition.

Well, he called me earlier and said the other guy never showed and asked if I could come down earlier so I hopped in the car and went. We ran though all the tunes on my audition list and about 5-6 more. They were quite happy. So they have 2 shows coming up, so I said if they didn't get someone in time I would do it on bass. They asked if I would join them on guitar anyway, I had mentioned that learning 45 songs on guitar for one bad is ok, but then learning another 45 on bass is tough. Remember these are all cover songs. A lot of the songs crossover between the two bands so if I could learn about 60 on one instrument it would be a lot easier then 45 on guitar and 45 on bass. If they don't find someone they like I can rawk the bass anyway, I love it.

damn this was too long

also while doing this, I took down sheetrock in the kitchend, put in insulation and re-sheetrocked the wall. MMMM, can you say nice deadened walls? My house was built in the early 50's so they didn't insulate the inner walls. I am now rectifying that. I am also redoing the whole kitchen including tearing down walls etc.

Weekend was productive.

Apparently. Zoinks!

When I first saw the thread title, I assumed you'd played four gigs in one weekend! :hypno:

All of those things sound awesome.

I personally don't know if i even have the capacity to learn and remember 45+ cover songs. It has always impressed me that there are folks who can do that. :isay:

I probably had ~45 Weezer songs memorized (music and lyrics) when I first learned to play guitar.

I might go try to play some actually ...

Actually it is true, at one point i knew a pile of other folks songs, like every nirvana song, every helmet song, all of the first weezer record, about half of all hendrix songs, a bunch of zeppelin...

But that is a little different. I think it is easier to learn a whole pile of one artist's songs, than it is to learn a whole pile of different artist's songs.

:idk:

This is true. I guess it depends on the range of music you cover. Tribute bands have it easy.

It's a different mindset. I was never a cover band guy, and I don't really worry about going note-for-note solos. I wing it, come close, and if there a lead that is super memorable I will try to learn it, but bullocks I say. You're there to see me... listen to what my fingers are saying. :monocle:

Plus 99.9% of the audience won't be able to tell the difference. As long as it sounds good.

This.

There are very few solo's that the general population cares if it's the same, or even notices.

This is very true. Even then, know the important licks and where they go and you can get away with it.

Example #1: the outro solo in Comfortably Numb. You can play whatever at the end. Just get the opening right.
