I was considering the tele bridge for a minute, but i think i will aim for a proper Mustang one. I have tons of fixed bridge guitars these days, but only a couple trem bridge guitars, and neither is a very good bridge. I like the style the Mustang has though.

I might consider putting the strat rail set like the ones i posted in with a 5-way. Depends on how i feel when i finally get to the point that i am able to buy bits for that build. :idk:

I haven't played around too much with SC-sized rail pickups, and have never had much curiosity to.
Just how different sounding from a standard 'bucker are they?

Pretty different. They are thinner, brighter, sharper-sounding, more prone to squealing. I like them mostly because i have kind of grown to hate single coil hum, and they give me a reasonable middle ground between the bright cleanish single coil sound i like, and the deeper tighter distortion sound that i like from full size humbuckers in comparison with the singles.

Exactly why I am putting one in the bridge of my tele.

Chris: just oil/clearcoat that motherfucker and be done with it, re: finish. Hell, kick it around a bit more. It would be fine looking like it was hewn from an ancient whatever with an axe. :nods:

Also: I have the bridge pickup from a late '90s Fender American Standard Stratocaster kicking around. I would give it up for a worthy build. This would qualify, if you want it.

Blarg. It figures that just after i finished shaping this thing, i came across a nice detailed fullsized blueprint for the telecaster. The body i made isn't sooooo far off(i traced it from my MIM tele ghettoquick(i.e. without taking the tele apart - i am impatient :red: )) but it is enough off that i am probably going to have to make another one in addition to this one. Which is okay, because i wanted to anyway.

What is cool about the blueprint, is that now i can make some router templates for everything so i can take some of the punk rock out of my future body shaping and pickup routing technique. Which basically should make it easier for me to get the guitars set up and intonated. The last pinecaster wanted to brawl a bit on that front at first, though i did get it to play along eventually. :red:

I ALSO found a blueprint that is an LP Jr. body... with the telecaster pickup, control, and bolt-on neck routs...

Which is interesting to me, because i have this rough shaped body(from the same tree) from a while back that i had abandoned for a while:
Image

Though i may just build that as a normal-ish LP Jr. with a P90 and wraparound bridge... I don't know yet. It will be a 25.5" scale though, as i am going to use the neck from my old Jackson JJ1 for it. :isay:

I am a fan of LP Jrs.

Well, I am a fan of P90s in general. Jackson neck? That should be a unique looking instrument :isay:

The JJ1 is an odd bird for Jacksons. It was the Scott Ian sig model back in the late nineties. The neck is baseball bat fat and has a 3+3 configuration:

The body on that guitar sucks though, real heavy, a bit cracked from being a touring/beater guitar, and pretty dead sounding in general. I like the neck though, so a new body is in order. :isay:

I was wondering, how does the pine sound exactly?
I know it's really soft in comparison to mahogany and alder, and must sound different in comparison.
How's the low end and sustain?
In terms of big power chord rock n' roll how would it work out?

Pine is weird. You mostly see it being used in tele type guitars. It is easy to shape, but also easy to fuck up. It is lightweight, but supersoft.

Soundwise, i hear it as being more focused on the mid/lower-mid and treble. It is not very inherently very bassy IMO, and i did not like it with higher output pickups in it. It sounds great with vintagey single coils, as it seems to tame a bit of the icepick, but at the same time add some weird mids that are kind of unique to what i have used for different guitar woods.

I like it best with lower gain setups. It has a nice resonance and i like the odd mids.

With higher gain setups it has sort of a looser characteristic to it, maybe because of the way it resonates. Usable for sludgy stuff, but much less useful for faster tech stuff. For fast chuggy things it loses clarity and can make things feel pretty saggy.

Part of the reason i am building all of these guitars out of it, is i want to test it with some other pickups and stuff and see what i like it most for. So far, i haven't like it with fullsize buckers, but do like it with the SC-sized rails and the regular singles. But this wood i cut from the tree is also much nicer and thicker than what i build the first pinecaster from, so i will see how that changes how i feel with various pickups. :idk:
