Sometimes I think I am. Then I read a well written book, and after witnessing the technical mastery these authors flaunt, I am humbled and ... and... the big word that means I am turned off of doing so. DAMMUT~ |

It's not about what you do that defines you as a writer, but how you do it. The best writers are all abrasive assholes who made far far more enemies than they ever did friends. Watch/Listen to some interviews with some awesome writers. Even when they are trying to be pleasant, you can just see/hear the asshole stirring inside of them. So, the best writers aren't necessarily alcoholics, but they are the most angry self-destructive drinkers you will find. They don't have to chain smoke cigarettes, but they will gladly blow smoke in your face. They don't have to be gay, but they won't use lube. |

Read anyone who falls under New Journalism (like Mailer  ) and you will usually get good writing, and a lot of asshole.You know how much pent up anger you can build up when your parents name you Gay Talese? How big of an asshole do you have to be to and submit a piece called "There Goes (Varoom! Varoom!) That Kandy-Kolored (Thphhhhhh!) Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby (Rahghhh!) Around the Bend (Brummmmmmmmmmmmmmm)..." to Esquire? Hunter S. Thompson is like asshole royalty. |
