One of those classic books that did what it did so effectively when it was originally published (1976) that even if one hasn't read it before today, they will be struck as they do read it, with the feeling that they already know all of this stuff.

I kept seeing this at the library and was fascinated by the cover. Wanted to read it on virtue of that alone, knowing not what was inside. I recently was down there but couldn't find it, now that I actually intended to read it...

Went hunting all around to find out what it is (all I had to go on was what was on the cover) and finally I ordered it on Amazon.

Amazon sells used books for a penny a piece.

Borrowed this from my mom; I like this guy now. Crime thriller stuff; not a heavy read, but fun:

Read another of his at my ladyfriend's house last week:

These things, I'll finish in two days. Not heavy. But well-written and engaging.

Currently reading this, which has a tad bit more weight to it:

I read crime thriller stuff a lot. Passes the time, and i like. Trying to figure it out while reading. Read a bunch of the sanford stuff. Michael Connelly is about my favorite, so many twists in his. I like his mind fux.

My dad is visiting again, and because my mom is at least as random as i have become over the years, she sent this with him, for me to read:

I mean partly, it is because they understand the type of asshole i am. But really, the bigger part of it (IMO) is probably that i am the way i am because of them.

How did you feel about Mother Tongue?

I am a Bryson fan myself, but do you dig him?

Mother Tongue was great. I gave it back to my roommate when I got back yesterday, which in retrospect perhaps I shouldn't have, yet, as I dog-eared a lot of pages for the quotations. She gave them to me- she picked them up on her way to Spain, and passed them and a couple others on to me during the one day we saw each other when she got back before I left for the week. She figured I would be a fan considering his writing style and my interest in etymology.

I read all of Mother Tongue at my ladyfriend's* and started on Made In America while the aforementioned was asleep or playing video games or doing mundane things like going to the doctor's office where my presence was of no consequence.

After finishing the one and being a hundred-and-change pages into the other, I'd call myself a fan and want the rest of his catalogue.

*- Whom I really need to encourage to start reading more again, poor depresséd thing. She was once a voracious reader.

Heya Chris!

All goes well- thanks! I'd been missing all my kin of musical endeavor of late, and figured I'd stick my nose in. not having too much going musically right now to speak of, sadly- but trying my best to stay outa trouble. You? I was digging reading the carryings on with axes and the like!

Yarr, i also havena really done any music/recording stuff for myself since, well, almost last July/August.

Have however been working for for money a bit, doing basically one of the grown-up equivalents of busy work. The income has been welcome and helpful to me tho.

Aside from all that, of late, mostly been collecting busted old tools, and making them go again, working on learning some old ways and putting them into constructive use for myself.

Have you been doing any more recording stuff? Or none of that either?

Chris, the latter looks highly relephant to my interests.

The only image I could find:
Image

I read it a couple years ago and am deciding to revisit. I can't sleep and we have to be up in the morning. It's a good read, and I'd like to remember some of the details a bit better than I do.

I've realized, in the moving process, just how many books I have. I think both by mass and volume they comprise the majority of my possessions. Gear would prior have comprised the most by mass, but I've sold off a bit. Which sucks, but what can you do? The funny/sad thing being I used to have a lot more. Now, if I kept all the gear I've owned over the years and all the books, I'd have a fucktonne of things.

good story. total disney completely wrapped up antireality as filmed by oliver stone. but whatever. good story. total crap, and halfheartedly recommended. if you like overromanticized crap set in foreign lands.

I tink you would diggit yes. I guess it was a BBC4 radio program, though i dunno how well it could have worked without some visual representation of the objects in question. In this form i do like it. Short little bits of information about a hundred cool and relatively important things dating back to the properly olden days. A pleasantly wide scope.
