I think I'll get a Cowon MP3 player instead. It costs a lot less and is still supposed to sound great.

But that truly is a Maplitonian's MP3 player.

If I could justify the cost, I would hit that right now.

But how good of quality can you get with an mp3? Wouldn't that be the limiting factor, rather then the device?

With my iPod, compared to listening on my Blackberry, I've realized that the amount of quality you can pack into a 320 kbps MP3 is lost in translation when it comes out of the iPod...

You know it's sad but true. :rawk: :wall:

The A/D and amp are the bottleneck, even from the same source file. This is easily observable if you have multiple sources and can move up the proverbial food chain fer what gets outputted into yer ears, the file and headphones being constant.

To do the reverse, take a really wonderful sounding album, something with tons of subtle detail- reverb tails, etc. Listen to it, or part of it. Rip it to 320kbps mp3. Listen on yer best system. To the mp3. Then go down from there.

I'm the asshole mentioned in the article who's listening to their mp3s on grownup 'phones. Realistically, give me the space for what I've been in the mood for lately in lossless and good A/D and a good headphone amp, and I'm there. That would be victory.

I'd rather listen to a cassette Walkman than a 128kbps mp3. I'm dead serious. mp3 is a convenience format. At its highest resolution, not a bad one. Yes, there will be audible detail loss on the best source material, but given the listening environment- are you listening to an mp3 player in a silent room at home? No. It's on 'phones in public- the detail you're losing is the first thing to get lost into the background or be so quiet you can't hear at that level. I'm not going to sit and marvel at the space between everything when I'm downing my coffee sitting on the forums after work, y'know? Don't fuck it up where it's not already fucking up, and if I want full-res, give me the capability to do it right.

FWIW, I can hear an audible difference from the headphone out of my Macbook Pro and an iPod. The former is decidedly superior, and that's not saying much, nor is it "I have golden ears!" bullshit. There's more clean headroom, better soundstage, period, fullstop. It's simply a manlier headphonemap.

I don't have that PIN shit. We basically took my cell plan with a normal phone and stuck my profile or whatever in a Blackberry, so I don't get any of the nifty shit.

We had to do it because it's quicker to text with and the other phone was chewed to fuck from opening beer bottles.
