A little taste though
...- o Father: Maxwell McAwesome – Born February 9, 1799
- Born onboard the USS Constellation to Lieutenant Jeremiah McAwesome and Elizabeth Shaw McAwesome, during the USS Constellation’s capturing of the French L’Insurgente at the Action of 9 February 1799.
- • Elizabeth, who had been serving as a galley-maid before falling in love with Jeremiah, is said to have fought as hard as any soldier that day.
• Legend has it, Elizabeth gave birth to Maxwell mid-battle. After realizing what had happened, she held the baby towards Jeremiah and shouted “What should we name him?”
• Over the battle, Jeremiah could not see the child, and confused her for saying, “Should we hang them?” Never passing up an opportunity to insult the French, Jeremiah responded with, “Might as well!”
• Once again the noise of battle muddled his words into what Elizabeth thought was a resounding, “Maxwell!”
