Cleaning out my mancave to make it more usable. I have this old mixing board. I was told it is broken. I have not attempted to confirm this, as I have nothing to hook it into. It's been here for years, and I was going to toss it, but no, that would be a bad idea wouldn't it? It's called the Altec 1220. It has its own reverb and compressor.

Even if it is broken I'm sure one could get inside and amputate preamps and other hardware goods.

Don't know anything about that board ( :red:bviously), but I know Altec makes siqqnasty mics and stuff.. Thing could contain some gnarness.

Apparently it sucks ass as a fidelity board, like it was the worst thing they made in the sixties...

But then why would I want fidelity from it, hm?

Schematics enclosed.

You don't use something like that for fidelity, no. You use it because it makes shit sound cool, or the right kind of shitty.

Personally, if it powers on and passes signal, I'd mod the thing, if possible, to have direct outs on the channels to use for recording. If possible I'd see if there was a way to mod it to route stuff through just the compressor or spring 'verb, too.

Plus all those VU meters look cool as hell.

It's all discrete components, apparently, so if nothing else it should be a hella lot easier to dick around inside there than a modern board.

Maybe a fix-it project for the summer. Thanks Snaxie!

Looking at the manual and it looks like it's got direct outs on all the channels.

And yer welcome! :isay:

Which means instant flavour maker premaps right there.

Yep. :D And enough to track some gnarly drums with.

I would just make it run and use it just like that, meself. Shit, i would run it into my 2-track for full on yuckvibe scumtones.

To Geoff- FWIW, the old green Altec mic mixers are well-thought of as cool "character" preamps that can be found on the cheap. (Well, the tube ones get pricey. The SS ones with the plug-in transformers are still cool though.) I've looked into picking one up before. I don't know whether this has a similar circuit or not. If nothing else they should be a contrast to the pres on your Focusrite. I like the pres on mine, but they aren't exactly colorful- very clean. I mostly use them for acoustic guitars, honestly, or for extra channels if I have a bunch of mics up and don't have anything else.

It already has the directs on the channels, so unless you wanted to patch into the reverb or compressor on their lonesome, no real reason to dick with the thing. I was under the impression before reading the manual that it would not have that very very useful recordingfeature.

I am just saying that, provided with such a slab of stuff, i would be inclined to step away from my laptop/interface entirely and just recoard some recoards as in the ways of the ancients.

While my whole "holyfuckwhyisnothingworking" darkhours, I was totally thinking about this. I'd still really like to try that sometime. If I had access to good preamps and a few bits of simple outboard gear, I could totally see going that way and just refusing to give fucks.

Post subject:  Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here

Mainly i see it as a refusing to give fucks about changing shit after the fact. Fact is, i played much more consistently when i recoarded to a 4-track all of the time, because punching in on that format is stupid enough, for one to desire avoidance. I also spent a lot less time fucking around with shit that had nothing to do with making rockandroll. :idk:

I feel myself generally pulling magnetically towards a sort of sonic ludditeism lately in general. :red:

Or should that be ludditery?

Post subject:  Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here

Yeah, punching in on a four-track is not cool. Go figure, the guy I sold my four-track to years ago occasionally delivers my mail. :hypno:

There are times I get very frustrated with the digital medium and miss just banging out shitmetal in the basement, to tape, and we'd just mix it right there on the board, with whatever for outboard- crappy live sound gear, guitar effects units, and I remember we had a graphic EQ that was from, like, a '70s stereo.

Unfortunately I'm one of those people digital was really made for, having written with a synth, drum machine and sequencer since before I could play guitar, and it's the sort of workflow where one really can build the mix as you go along. When I start working rock instrumentation into there, though, it makes me really want to do the final mix of things on a real board. I find it a lot more intuitive, and honestly, it's just plain more fun.

The proper term is "Ludditism", but "Ludditude" could work if you wanted to be a bit more colorful.

So I plugged an SM58 into it, flipped the switch, and it powered up. Moved the slider up and spoke into the mic, and the metre rose. So apparently it's not so broken. I dunno why he said it is. Maybe he couldn't get it to play out of his PA speakers.

Well... :isay:

So it's working out. :huzzah:

The above clip is my Avantone MONDO kick and an Audix i5 on the snare. An omni room mic going into my Focusrite to fill it out, which I mute intermittently. At the very end I solo just the snare.

The pres overload very easily. I ended up finding settings that just clip the top off the drum strokes, so they are getting a wee bit of compression so to speak straight in, and I think the result is very punchy and a little brown.

I think it's kind of cool? I'm going to be recording an EP for a friend later this summer and we want it to be a little dirty. So all dynamics can be treated thusly. Cooool. :mwahaha:

A benefit in this is that you would have the built in horrid reverb and compressor (fuzz pedal, apparently) also! I don't think condensers are a possibility with this thing, but it would be gnartown to just put up a punch of dynamics and ribbons and record a really weird band, then mangle it with the onboard garbage and send that to a tape.
