What game to play ...?

this happens to me sometimes, I think I hit reply instead of submit sometimes, but if you hit the back arrow on your browser it will still have what you typed. usually by the time I realize I'm already on some porno site or some such shit

I could believe I would do that.

So I typed like 4 pages that I don't feel like going through, but basically our easy options are:

D&D 3/3.5e:

Classic pen and paper style D&D based on the 20 sided dice system.

D&D 4e:

Still d20, but assumes (but does not require) a grid map and avatars (figurines in the classic sense) are used, and distance is measured in grid blocks as opposed to feet. If we want to use a map grid we would need to come up with a map and player-character system like MapTool or GameTableProject.

Shadowrun:

Like the classic pen and paper D&D, but based on 6 sided dice rolls and set in a fucked up 2074. Guns and tanks and such. The latest edition is supposed to be very streamlined and pretty nice.




OR, we could take the rules established by any of these games and create our own setting and such. For example, use the D&D-based Star Wars Saga rules and create some sort of modern setting.



So whatcha guys think?

Id put my two cents on either D&D 3/3.5 or Shadowrun solely because it is all pen and paper, meaning we could just post-to-play. It would let us get the ball rolling and such, and it lets the imagination run a bit more wild.


Also, do you think we could implement this php mod for dice rolls?

It looks like version 3.7.2 looks stable enough, but I have no idea.

If not, I have a set of d20 dice so I can roll for people as necessary.

Dev's rationale makes sense. 3rd ed. D&D was a pretty major change from 2nd when it came out, and my nerdgroup always stuck with 2nd (flirting with other things, including Shadowrun (only briefly) and our own system for a Victorian horror/dark modern fantasy setting). I think I can wrap my somewhat rusty brain tentacles around either 3rd ed. or the current Shadowrun given the chance. I've read the 3rd ed. books when they were new, but that was what, like 12 years ago at this point?

Also, I like the idea of a [dice] tag. I'll try not to be the first one to use it out-of-context in one of the other forums.

Also, I have the full set of D&D 3.5 (not much changed from 3 to 3.5 but a few random rules) books from monster compendiums to player handbooks so if ya needs a copy hit me up. It's all PDF.
