That is the correct amount of strings basses are supposed to have. |

I think Squier has figured out how to appeal to the hipster crowd with their newest models. 5-string natural finish jazz bass with a maple fretboard and block inlays? Fuck yes sir, fuck yes. |

I always thought Fenders with the block inlays looked best. Jazzes/Jags lookin' fancy as hell. |

I have no use for a 5-string, but that is swell-looking. My next bass will be a straight up P-bass style. I might just make a P body for my SX jazzneck even. I should probably just pull of the pickguard on that thing and see if it has a P-bass pickup rout under it or not. A hybrid would probably be just fine, though i would prefer it to be based on the P body rather than the J one. I would also at some point really like something in a shortscale, i like the sound of them. The more i play bass, the more i enjoy it. I have always considered myself to play bass "like a guitarist" but the fact is, that i approach bass in a very different way than i do the guitar. And when i write on bass or drums, i tend to produce things that i like the sound of more. |

Why no use for a 5-string? Every time I think about bass parts I always have those extra note possibilities nagging at me (I have a 4). |

I guess for me, i think of it as being more: there aren't really any more notes on a five string, it is just easier to hit them without moving your hand/arm much. I play all over the neck on the four-string, and it has a lot to do with how the things i play, sound, in how they have to be fretted/fingered. And i don't much like how it sounds tuned much lower than D, or maximum, B. If i played more metal, i might be more into it for dropped tunings. But when i think of what most of my favorite bass players have used to make the sounds i like, it is pretty much never more than four. |

For me, I have a lot of songs that will go from like.. E in the verse with a chorus within the extended range of the 5th string. So the idea of being able to slam a C power chord with a C 2 octaves below reinforcing it across some unsuspecting bastard's chest gets me pretty excited. |

I feel you, and I would still like a 4-string with buckers (like the new Fender ones ) at some point. A Stingray is pretty much my dream bass. That said, I want the 5 for easier runs on funky stuff, or heavy riffing in general on bass. I was taught to be very conservative with my hand movements on bass, so that has always stuck with me. For general rock and roll bass playing, a 5 would be pointless to me. |

I find fours a bit more comfortable neck- and string spacing-wise, but I prefer the five for the added range. Even just having the D there is nice; you can sneak that in in totally normal-sounding stuff in standard tuning and it doesn't seem out of place- sorta what Cam pointed out re: being able to hit something two octaves below the root of the guitars. It does facilitate being able to hang out in one vague general position, too. It's a useful tool for more than just the obvious funk or metal stuff. For what it's worth, the guy at the guitar store near my house has a lot of praise for the current Squier basses. He's a bassist himself, and he wasn't trying to sell me one. They seem to have developed a good rep the past few years. |
