Which four way are you rocking? Series/parallel mid position? Single coil pickups?

I don't notice more noise on mine that has the neck pickup cover removed. That's a standard three-way though. :idk:

I think the manufacturer is Oak Grimsby or something like that... The four way thing is a really common tele mod where the fourth position on the switch is both pickups in series. I did some research and it seems it won't be an issue that I've removed the cover.

Yarr, it shouldn't be, for the series parallel mod.

In some cases though, it is worth noting that if your bridge and neck pickup are vastly different outputs, they may not buck hum correctly. A proper humbucker needs two pickups wound opposite that are otherwise equal in power/etc, so that the hum produced by each cancels the other out. If one is a ton more beefy than the other its hum can possibly power through the reversed polarity hum of the weaker one, and you might get hum(less than the loud pickup by itself, but it won't be exactly silent).

I suspect that this might be what foalks might be trying to avoid when they say that you will need additional grounding arrangements.

But, in general, though the cover is connected to ground IIRC, so should be one of the two leads once you wire it into the guitar, so removing the cover might result in less shielding, but should not result in less grounding. :idk:

Keith on if he had to pick on acoustic and one electric, obviously he selects a tele... but I love the reason.

Well, no shit. The thing is a slab, and probably the sturdiest piece of lumber out there to wield. It doesn't have a Strat's trem, or a Les Paul's headstock. Who the eff ever broke a Telecaster? And it sounds like balls in the good way.

My housemate and I had a discussion over the summer about household armaments in case there was ever a break-in, and we decided the Fenders in the living room could be pressed into service if need be. She's pretty buff and I would not want to be on the receiving end of that.

Yeah so installed the switch... had to take a dremel to the electronics cavity to get it to fit... but now with no cosmetic change to the guitar (except that the knob doesn't fit this switch, gonna have to replace that :red: ) I have FOUR SOUNDS! :rawk: The new pickup combination is indeed louder, more compressed, bassier. In fact it is quite mushy, and I wouldn't necessarily use it for rhythm tones. But it is a great gooey lead sound with a hint of twang. Me gusta.

BTW yes the main page pic is Micawber.

Wouldn't be a Tele thread without this link

I kind of assumed it was. I was actually going to Google search to make sure, but you confirmed it before I needed to look.

Czeching out the link, bonus points to Mr. Riffhards for rocking Twin #3. Much like Gilmour and Strat #1, these things belong in the hands of people who will use them.

I had pic up earlier but it showed Micawber with 6 strings which it does not do. So this is a verified pic.

I still want to build a hollow tele out of maple with that style pickup. That is one of my oldest abandoned projects.

A humbucker or a Strat pickup is an improvement in the neck for my tastes. A Tele lives and dies by the bridge pickup, and, to a point, the bridge itself. And I've always liked the '59s; they are a known quantity and make a fine neck pickup in anything. A Tele is not a a Strat, where swapping out the neck pickup is potentially sinful.

Plain black is never the wrong choice.

You remind me of the fact that I've had a month of free time to install my darn pickups in my telecaster.

I was keeping it a secret what pickups they are, but they are Keystones. You're right that a strat neck is an improvement, and apparently they Keystone neck pickup is very stratty. Bonus.

That it is. The fourth position also got a lot less mushy. It is quite a keen sounding guitar now. A bit hard to play though, having trouble getting the action low enough.

Maybe someday I'll have Warmoth make me a tele that plays like a superstrat. :isay:
