Joey? Devin? Anyone? How do they compare to higher-end Epiphones? I can find LP Studios for about six bills all day long, and I miss having something like that of my own for rawk riffing porpoises and when I'm inclined towards a more metallic direction.

I really liked a recent one I was playing. I run the gamut on LP's. Jr's, deluxe, custom, standard, special. I don't have a studio in my arsenal at the moment but the one I got cheap and built up for my friend I really liked a lot. Modern studios are still LP's. Ok so they don't have binding and some bell and whistles, still sounds like a Les Paul should and definitely the best bang for buck to get that LP tone.

Thank you good sir! Seeing as you're our resident LP guy, I figured I'd address you specifically in addition to our general audience. :isay: I've played a number of more recent ones that I've liked, especially compared to the early 2000s- fit and finish seems to be better these days- and I was curious how they stack up. The lack of appointments doesn't necessarily bother me, and I like the current less-finished ones aesthetically. Rather bare wood and oil than half a mile thick poly lacquer anyhow. (And there's silver ones! But I have a thing for silver guitars for some reason.)

The studios aren't weight-relieved, correct?

Post Re: Current/recent production Les Paul Studios: thoughts?
I still occasionally think back to the one superbasic lp studio (i think it was the first of the "faded" series?) that i played and should have bought way back in like somewhere between 1998 and 2000 or so. I wish i could return and buy that one. Shit was a good weight and a fantastic sound, 100% LP. And that was around the time that a dad's friend had let me borrow a real live 50's goldtop(well, former goldtop, dipshits liked to sand these off back in the day, so this one looked like a natural finish) LP for a couple weeks. So the faded studio compared very favorably to that. [Which i found surprising, as the studio doesn't have 3/4" of solid maple cap onnit, but this particular guitar at least, didn't show that at all in the sound, maybe showed it just a little in the weight, though the 50s guitar was actually not blindingly heavy at all(maybe 9-10lb)]

I don't know shit about modern gibson though. :red:

My suspicion though would probably be to do it like i would do an SG, play a pile of them, and buy the good one.

I still kind of want to do that, even though i have declared a moratorium on new guitar acquisitions. (but i kind of want to get another SG too, because i am a bad person who lacks restraint.)

I believe all LP's are weight relieved now.

After lumbering around with a non weight relieved ('1977 Deluxe) you would be happy that the studio is... the 77 is about 12lbs.

I have heard guys say they have some of the Custom shop historics that are not weight relieved that are around 8-9 lbs. I cannae afford such an animule.

I once played a mid-'70s Custom whose owner claimed it weighed in at twenty-six pounds. :hypno: I don't know how the claimed weight is even possible, but it was the single heaviest stringéd thing I've ever played by a good amount. (Pianos excepted, of course.) Sixteen I could see, easily, though, with that guitar. Fucker was strung with the GHS Zakk Wylde signature set with a 70 for the low string (I can't bring myself to call it a low E. No one's tuning that to E. ) too. Even tuned to C# standard as it was, bending was just not happening. Dude played in a NYHC sort of band, so it was purely for chug rhythm, and suitably unsubtle.

Of the 2014 finishes, I think this is particularly fine:

Post Re: Current/recent production Les Paul Studios: thoughts?
Ehh I'd take a 2013 Studio over one of the new 2014s. They are nice enough guitars but they feel closer to one of those cheaper LPJs. I have an Alpine White 2013 Studio that I unboxed yesterday (evidently it had been sitting in a warehouse somewhere) in the store for $899.99 new that blows most of the $200 more new studios out of the water.

Also I don't use coil tapping or any of the fun new features, which I know was kind of their selling point. Also that khaki/beige color of plastic hardware they are using now looks pretty awful; though it can look better on certain finishes like the (dark but somehow) Brilliant Red.

Now for $500 more bucks the Studio Pros are really killer guitars. They are like the older studios but with a nice top, better pickups and all the fun switching options. IMO it's the best bang for the buck LP out of the 2014 line and they can be had used for around $1000 easily.

I guess I would have to say if you can get your hands on the 14 Studio and like how it feels, everything else about it is a Studio as it should be. But I just can't gel with how it felt in my hands, YMMV.

Also on the cheaper side the 60s Tribute LP by Epiphone at $699 (and they are $100 off now at Sam Ash for the Columbus Day Sale) are solid. All mahogany with a real maple cap (no veneer), solid Gibson pickups and a nice HSC. They are honestly nicer guitars than the LPJs at $750. OH and the 2014 Melody Makers are at like $500 right now. You replace that bridge with a nice wraparound and you have a killer guitar. Finish is kinda gross like the LPJs and 14 Studios (sticky and prone to damage) but they are pretty awesome for US-Made < $1000.

Also I got my '92 Studio for $450, so if you want one they can be had for cheap (at least around here, I can always procure you one and ship it up to you) and honestly the older studios are pretty tits. Honestly I see a stupid amount of killer used guitars going for cheap at my store (people trying to sell them just above our cost limit on them) if you'd like I can keep my eye out for a nice LP, give it a proper setup through my tech Andy Townsend and ship it up to you.

We'll see in the near future when some bills are taken care of. I admit we kinda overspent on things this month. I'm also looking for a five-string bass at the moment, which may take priority.

I will let you know if this is a do-able thing. The market kinda sucks up here; getting one for under six is a deal- despite the general crap state of the local economy, everyone seems to try to sell gear (usually halfass gear, at that) for a good bit more than it's worth. That would be fantastic though, and I would appreciate the hell out of it. :D See above post, but possibly in the reasonably near future. :nods:

Given your relocation and all, I don't suppose you'd still have a hookup on things, would you, Mr. Devin?

Nah man I am doing 50/50 NC/NY. I'm actually about to go to the store right now. Want me to keep an eye out for something in particular?

EDIT: I don't work there anymore, but the drummer in my band is the Drum Manager and a Senior Manager, so I can at least get something worked out.

I'm extending my feelers for one of the 2014 LP Studios in red, with the original electronics (as the push-pull pots on there are very nice- supposed to be more of a P90 voicing to the coil taps, and it's quite usable). I don't know that one will turn up, but I'm keeping an eye out all the same. If something turns up, that would be fantastic of you to let me know. :nods:

Devin: thank you for your offer of assistance. I just picked up a dual 'bucker set neck Tele, so I think that'll serve for the time being. :nods:

I won it in an Ebay auction (I actually won an auction rather than just hitting "buy it now"!) so I'll poast up a shot when it arrives.

Might as well take a photo of the silverburst while I'm at it, since it has a mirror chrome guard and the Manlius True Range in the neck these days. :nods:
