So word on the web of is that you get more warmth, wood, sustain, out of doing this. What scientific knowledge I possess tells me otherwise, since the rest of the guitar is not a vibrating metallic string so the pickups aint gonna get shit from how they are suspended beneath such strings. There is the fact that maybe a more direct mounting would add more direct mass to the resonating body. Is that it? What say you, gents. |

I never noticed that huge of a difference in sound personally between directly screwing the shits into the body and floating them in a ring. I did it to a couple guitars back in the day, but didn't like it enough to keep it. Mainly, i found it much more useful soundwise, to have more control via the normal mounting means, to adjust the heights and angles of the pickup. Like, that makes a much more obvious difference in pickup sound quality to my ears. |

Funny, Strats tell me mounting the things in a pickguard over a big empty space makes a difference. The body itself seems almost reverberant. Humbuckers mounted in a small empty space with rings don't seem to matter. I've had some Soloists with direct-mounted pickups in the past, but it didn't seem to be a big deal, not enough for me to notice vs. the tonal qualities of the pickup itself. I suppose it's more a function of how hollow the guitar itself is than anything. |

P an J basses, direct to the body with a sponge below them. Some other basses in a ring... meh... doesn't seem to make a difference to me. I seem to like guitars with e ring overs direct to pickguard. but I never honestly thought that much about it |
