recommend a pup
My 72 Tele RI has the stock pup in the neck, but a duncan distortion in the bridge, which is too high output for that guitar the tones I 'm looking for. I've not tried the GFS pups was thinking of trying one out in it. Anyone recommend something? I use this in a classic rock cover band. Of course I am still liking the idea of a P-rail... but tell me what you think.

So, a fullsize humbucker.
Well, if you can work with a little hum, the GFS p90 comes in a fullsize humbucker package for dirt cheap.
For my own purposes, i like more of a PAF style humbucker though. Less "character" to it, but tighter, and no hum, while still retaining some of that ability to clean up with the volume knob, moreso than say, a Duncan Distortion.
In my geetars, i have liked:
• Some old 70s Gibson pickups in mahogany and alder bodies. I have a pair in my beat up longterm loaner SG that i have tried in some other things, and they sound great pretty much everywhere. Pretty low output, less than my GFS cool vintage rail SC-sized buckers in my tele. Though they did have wayyy more low end.
• Duncan JB in a mahogany body. You either like it or hate it. I did not like so much it in alder or basswood, DO like it in mahogany, where it just sounds like rock to me.
• Dimarzio Norton in basswood, and alder, and mahogany bodies. This is a cool pickup IMO. Similar, though slightly less output than a JB, but with a much more pleasant EQ to the midrange. More like a hot PAF sort of vibe.
• Jackson J-50BC in basswood and alder. This was designed to be sort of a (only slightly) hot paf, and to be used with the jackson onboard active preamp/midboost to get pretty angry. Which is a popular metal configuration for it. On its own, it is just a nicely balanced lower output PAF-style though. One of these came in my very first electric guitar, a Charvette By Charvel that over the years i unfortunately mostly destroyed. I didn't appreciate the pickup so much until years later when i started plugging it into various guitars and realizing that it sounded sweet in just about everything.
