Post Humbuckers: Direct mount VS Mounting ring
Okay, so I am replacing some pickups in my guitar.

Image

The stock ones were screwed directly to the body...

My Seymours do not fit the stock screws for mounting to the body, and the screws that came with them are not fit for screwing into wood. They did however come with mounting rings.

So what shall I do? Take a drill to the guitar and use the mounting rings? Or somehow convince the pickups to accept the stock screws (is that possible)?

Also I am just curious if you guys have any opinions as to whether there are sonic advantages to either mounting method.

Direct mount humbuckers look more metal.... in a good way :unstrung: :rawk:

couldn't you just fill in the screw holes and find some screws that are good for wood yet still work with the duncans without modification to the pickups??

or you could just duct tape them for teh uber brootalz... :bangin:

Ah it's too late. I put the mounting rings on. Gotta wire it up and then wrestle with the Floyd a bunch, then maybe a clip?

bah. I would have just duct taped a sm57 directly to the body. THAT would be moar metal. :monocle:

How curious... I made an update the my previous post, with schematics and comments about the guts of my guitar. It's gone now.

-gives other mods a suspicious look- :eekass:

I prefer the look with the mounting rings. :idk:

What pickups are those, if I may ask? IIRC that's a Distortion in the bridge?

No. I think any difference would be minimal and not particularly advantageous one way or another. I don't think the impact is significant. It's not like a Strat where there's a big amount of wood taken out of the body and the pickups are just floating there in a big hollow space or a Tele where the bridge pickup is mounted in a bigass piece of metal.

I have always hated body-mounted pickups. I can be pretty picky about how the height of the things are adjusted, and body-mounted ones are just a pain in the balls to jigger and rejigger. Pickup rings are way moar better.

I suspect the height has a lot more impact on the tone than how the thing's mounted.

Not only that, whether or not you mount the pickups to the body or not, it still comes down to the body wood itself. If that makes sense ...

I endorse the Distortion.

A high output humbucker. I support it. You know it's gotta be good.

Yus... a seven string I snagged on Craigslist. The idea here is that I can now play my chuggy slamz and djentz, but also still be able to play everything else on the same guitar... I am very much the type who their hands to be accustomed to one axe. To me it's like speaking one language well as opposed to speaking four languages with no depth...

It has a coil tap by the way, and these pickups sound great split. So I really can play everything. :huzzah: (Not that I CAN play everything...)

See I was going to replace the Distortion in my Tele Deluxe, but now that guitar seems to be a bit of everything for me, the low output fake wide range in the neck and the high output distortion in the bridge.

Try putting a coil split on that bridge pickup. It is quite nice. :D
