Any good? I can finally afford a cheap bass and the Vintage P-Bass in white is fucking sexy - http://www.squierguitars.com/products/s ... 0326800505  So what say you, mapz - better than a "standard" squier which is probably cheaper, or is this the same quality but looks cooler? |

I played the vintage modified fretless bass Squier came out with and it felt solid. As long as the materials are all solid, it should be a decent enough bass. They are also easy to upgrade. |

I have also played some recent Squiers that were quite nice actually. Main thing i have found with all cheap Fenders is the same as with SGs: play a bunch and pick the one that is best. |

I'll have to see if my local shops sell em then. I was also looking at the Epiphone Thunderbird but I think it'll be too bassy and "metal" for the kind of bass sound I like, but apparently they're solid instruments and I've had good experience with Epiphone before.. I ready a few reviews of the P-Bass and apparently the tuners and hardware aren't all that, but I have a feeling it's probably people on the internet being picky sods  This is one of my favourite bass tones, punchy and lively  For teh rawkz I might want something a bit smoother and deeper but I guesss thats just in the tone control  The bassist in the cover band I sometimes play with has a P and it sounds good.

Are you OK with neck heavy basses? Like REALLY neck heavy? Cause the Epi T-bird bass has been the most consistently neck heavy (or heavy in general) bass I have played. |

In that case I'll give it a miss then and stick to the original idea of either a P or J bass!  Gonna go play some and see which I prefer the feel and toanez of. It'll be quite embarrasing though since I never play bass so when I plug in everyone will know how shit I am at fingerstyle bass

So... use a pick? That Rancid sound is very much a picked bass, IMO. Fuck the fingerstyle bass purists, picked bass sounds fucking awesome. |

Nothing wrong with using a pick. Even I, something of a purist on the matter, use a pick occasionally. Though overdriven bass, played with fingers, has its own kind of balls.

Overdriven bass with fingers is definitely a great sound. The lack of articulation (in a good way) on the higher strings gets that violin-y sustain flavor thing going.

I can't wait to play my first overdriven/fuzzed bass sound, it'll be a moment of sheer joy I imagine Hopefully I finish work early tomorrow so I can go guitar shopping, feels like I haven't done this in far too long

I play bass with and without a pick, depending on the song. I have heard excellent things on talkbass about the vintage P's. Check out some threads there for any bass related stuff. Those bass guys REALLY love their basses. They are not snobs either. They consistently appreciate the SX basses.

I had a go on some today. Wasn't the fairest test since our local shops are a bit crap and have limited stock. Thunderbird copy - uncomfortable and too "clunky" so that's out. I then played a Jazz copy and it was fine. Played a Fender MIM P-Bass and the neck felt the same as the J copy to me and I had no real trouble with my left hand - right is more of a problem but my fingerpicking isn't as bad as I thought it would be. So I'll probably go with which looks coolest and get the vintage modded P, unless I can find a P with a J pickup as well for more versatility

The bridge pickup is what makes a J-Bass a J-Bass, same as a Telecaster. A P/J will give you some good stuff to work with. A P-Bass does... well, one sound, but it's that sound. I'm of the opinion Mr. Fender got it right the first time with those two. |

To be honest my ear for bass tone probably isn't good enough to tell the difference  What I hate is super thin funky slappy bass. It sounds shit. I want a big thick meaty low end with enough punch/top end to not sound dull. And something that will work well with a fuzz pedal, of course

You will definitely want at least a P pickup. J bridges can get thin (but very very very raunchy) sounding. |

This. A J bridge, distorted-to-all-fuckery is the Dirty Snaxobass sound. Even my clean-ish tone (I'm always overdriven a bit, even for the funk stuff) is actually mostly J Bridge. I'm also tuned low with heavy strings and play hard, though, which beefs it up a bit. I that mid grind though!

Well I just ordered me the VM P-Bass in white/black/rosewood  Now I just need an amp, I have a feeling that Maplitube 3 isn't going to suffice for very long
