I know a dood who used to gig a Dual Showman Reverb into a 4x12, which is pretty much the same thing. It was definitely a cool sounding rig.

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
I looked into many of those old SF combos with 4x10/12's or 2x15s.
Sound awesome.
8 bitches in a bitch boat to move though.
My fucking SF Bassman head is fucking heavy by itself. Like, stupid heavy.

My Twin with one speaker (for half power purposes) weighs in at about 85-90lbs.
Heavy sucker.

I like the concept, gotta admit. Totally useless for my porpoises, but I suspect it of sounding slightly awesome.

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
Well, I have a thing for the old SFs, but they did all sound pretty awesome in their own little ways. But, not any more awesome then one of their head counterparts running through a similar/appropriately sized cab. Like, I considered buying a 4x10 to run with my Bassman, but I simply would not own (to use as a gigging amp, for recording I DGAF how much it weighs) a proper Bassman/RI combo. Shipping estimates on my SF Bassman 50 (both receiving it and when I sent it out to Zach) had the package at somewhere around 70lbs. Granted, there is some packaging weight there, but not that significant of an amount. The transformers in that thing are fucking huge though, IIRC.

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
I don't find the 4x10 Super Reverb combo that much of a bear to move around, no more so than my AC30 at least. Both still beat a 4x12 cab. Big tube combos are, well, big. Nature of the beast really.

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
I'm a total slack-ass when it comes to moving things as well. I hate moving my AD30VT, which weighs like 10lbs (a bit of an lowball estimate ). I get annoyed enough with my 2x12 cab, I would actually consider buying another 2x12 to stack on it instead of switching to a 4x12. This would require new speakers/re-wiring of my cab to handle the change from the 4ohm single load out to the 8ohm split load out from the amp. My last combo was a Egnater TOL50 (I have used/"owned" [acquired by means of it being left at my house/in my car] combos since, but was never the one to purchase them) which I had like, two or three years back now.

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
I have always found 4x10s (and 4x10 combos) to be surprisingly light. The standalone cabs are so cute and small too. Of course i never really had any beef with the 4x12 cabinet either. Except for the one oversized Crate one i had that i got for free after it had been in a flooded practice space. I am pretty sure it was still slightly waterlogged when i finally gave it away a year later. Otherwise, i prefer using a 4x12 for everything. Particularly with a lower watt maphead. I still need to build a sweet 2x12 though. Probably just rip off the Emperor style oversized shizz and see what it gets me. Theoretically, i suspect that it might do what i wish it to.

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
I would be interested to see how that goes. My 2x12 is either an Avatar Traditional or a clone of one. It is ... ok. It does it's job. However, I have been looking into oversized/diagonal 2x12s to help with the low end. This all would be after I get my amp back though. It might end up loving that cab. The stock SFB50 had a bit too much booty for the cab at times. The BL80 and R60 can actually bring some surprisingly heavy lows.

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
Aye, that has been my fuss with the 2x12s that i have experimented wif thus far. They get ugly with low end. I have only used Fender style pine ones so far though, also. Which sounds great for cleanish, but the low end gets goofy cranked out and kind of goes mud. Too much resonance for the form factor and wood type. Not to mention the fact that if i use the things in a vertical arrangement, the vibrations can make the cab crawl around the floor.

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
This indeed does happen on my hardwood floors. I am to afraid to vert it on carpet. I may be imagining it, but I swear I see the thing rock back and forth ever-so-slightly as I play. I do not like that. I did have a vert 2x12 that I did like. In fact, I sold it Mrs. V. That is what inspired me to look into the diagonal 2x12s. A bit more volume, raises one speaker off the floor and it just looks meatier. I am wondering if the pine may be the culprit for the flubbyness. I do love the clean toanes, but I can sacrifice a bit of the "openness" for better lows for my supa-fuzz toanes. I did close the back of it up as tightly as possible which did help a lot, but it still isn't quite what I am looking for.

Is your current cab pine?

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
It is super light, and kinda smells like pine. I always just sort of assumed it was. If not, it is significantly lighter than 13-ply birch 2x12s I have messed with. Actually, that is why I am not completely convinced it is actually an Avatar cab. Their Trads. are 13-ply Baltic. The inside of my cab is painted, so it is hard to tell. I am just going by weight on this one.

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
If it isn't a real Avatar, it may very well be pine. Fender's own official 2x12 design, was quite similar to what Avatar uses, and was traditionally, made of pine ply. They are good sounding cabs, especially for cleanish stuff. Chances are that if what you have is not Avatar, it may be actually a Fender copy. Also, it may be pine regardless, for the same reason that all of my homebrew cabs so far have been pine. It is sooooo much less expensive than proper baltic birch.

I much prefer my 2x12s to be open back. You do have watch that the bass doesnt get out of hand.

Re: Holy overkill, batman.
If it is an Avatar, it is one of the older 2x12 Trads (non Premier) that they no longer sell, so really. It does sound nice with cleans though, and is definitely a Fender clone.
