Post Marshall conversion
Last week I'm testing my WWIII rig for my show coming up this Sat. 5150->RedBear Cabinet, Small Letter Marshall 100 watt tremolo->Peavey Cabinet. I finally got the Marshall wired correctly to act as power amplifier and all systems were go. Then all of a sudden.... pfffffff. No sound out of Peavey Cabinet. Now I bring the Marshall back to the bench and find nothing wrong. Then being a lazy mother fucker I get out my trusty "How To Service Your Own Tube Amp by Tom Mitchell" Go to the no sound section. Check speakers. DUH! I find I blew one of the speakers in the Peavey Cab. YAH! Now that just blows my 3 cab setup because I was going to use my old 1970s Marshall cab with the green backs as well.

After searching craigslist in every state and ebay, I decided to buy this old 1960b cabinet for $200. Guy says its all working, just looks ugly, original speakers, no grill cloth. I say, fine I'll give you $200 as long as all the speakers work. To my surprise I test them all with ohm meter and battery and quick check with an amplifier and all works great. I could of brought my frequency gen., but I think that was getting a little too overkill for what I need. I just need at least one speaker that works properly. I had also ordered a grill cloth and it came the same day I bought the cabinet.

More thinking going on as I decide I can leave the green back cab home and bring the RedBear, Peavey and 1960b. I have 2 EVM 12Ls 300 watt speakers In our ISO cabs for recording. I have been trying to upgrade to all this type because they are extremely loud and durable but also hard to find used at a decent price. You probably know new they are over $200 a piece. I was lucky a year ago a Sound company was selling lots of these used and I was able to get them for $120 a piece. One was actually freshly reconed. And the other was the cream of the crop since I was the first buyer. If I had more money I would of bought every one of them. So back to the saga. I can't find any EVM 12ls cheap so I decide to buy 2 more new Celestion G12T-75 8 ohm speakers. $120 shipped for both. The EVMs are 8 ohm as well and all other speakers I have are 16 ohm. So this is how it stands now.....

RedBear= 4 Celestion G12K-85 16 0hm
Peavey= 2 Celestion G12T-100 16 Ohm, 2 Celestion G12T-75 16 Ohm
Marshall 1960b = 2 EVM-12L 300 watt, 2 Celestion G12T-75 8 Ohm

Only problem now the guy who is selling me the 8 ohm Celestions made a mistake with the shipping. His stupid wife shipped them UPS Ground! Instead of being here by Tues. The guy says it will be here Friday. I told him I'll just ship them back if they don't arrive in time for my gig. YAH!

So after I got the 1960b I dismantled it completely. Removed the little bit of tolex remaining. Got rid of tape used as tolex. I left the strip of tolex where the back panel fits into the cabinet so there is no gap. Filled in holes with PL. Made 2 missing insignia backing plates. Painted with flat black paint. Installed the grill cloth. Put everything back together. Made phony RedBear logo. Took picture of RedBear logo on real cab. Fixed up with paint shop. Printed on regular paper. Made mount out of wood paneling. Glued paper to paneling. Touched up edges with Black Sharpie. Covered with laminate. Installed on cab. Mounted the EVM 12ls. Still waiting for Celestions. I will make new wire harness. I will drill hole in center of cab so I can install wood screw to connect to center post. I do this with all my cabs. Keeps the back from pushing out when the heavy stuff is pumping through the cab.

Enough with the talk.... Here are the pics...

tl;dr

I really tried too. :dukes:

But I'd like to say that you run a really big rig for your shows. Is there no PA? How does your drummer feel about this?

Who am I to argue, we roll in with NMV shizzle and Herbie? :huzzah: The guy from my metalband busts on us for how loud we are.

Nothing exceeds like excess. :rawk:

As long as you can Deliver The Goods, of course. Otherwise, you look like a D-Bag and The Opposite Of Awesome.

What's the deal with those 85s, anyhoo? I am not familiar.

Ah I'm glad you asked and now I'll let you in on some of my secrets. The old Peavey 412MS cabinets were all birch and almost identical to Marshall cabs. My Peavey came stock with Celestion G12K-85 speakers. K stands for Keyboard. But don't let that fool you. They are basically a bigger version off the old 75, much heavier and has the breather hole on the back as well. I bought the peavey cab used for $100 not even knowing about these speakers. They have a more thick and un colored sound than the 75 and withstand punishment. I haven't blown these yet and they were used when I got them. Secret- Look for old Peavey 412MS cabinets. Ask the seller what speakers are in the cabinet privately. If other buyers don't know those speakers are in there, then they will think its just another piece of shit peavey cabinet.
