Considering selling my Quick Rod. :( I love it, but it doesn't really suit what I do. Which is playing jugga jugga jun jun slams. It could totally deliver it live, but I'd never get to use it on a recording. I mean sure I should have a half stack, just not necessarily this one!

If I do it I suppose I'll pick up a Peavey. Recording that 5150... that was an eye opener.

Really?

Now, this is one where I have to play Devil's Advocate. Especially doing the metal thing.

I associate the Splawn with being perhaps a bit too smoove, too refined for that sort of noise. But I was the asshole using not-metal amps for the metal, so I want to make sure you've checked and checked and checked again before you offload the thing. Because sometimes these amps want to yell and swear and use a lot of bad words at snacktime.

If you were gonna sell a Splawn and acquire a 5150, I would guess you could pick up something useful with the balance- a cool mic, more channels in, etc. But make sure you're totally sold on offloading the thing first. Give it a few twists of the knobs first before you decide what you need- not want; I think the answer here is need, from your description- the most is not in that box.

I've had some nice shit I wish I still had, and sometimes could even use. But... I won't stop you, but make sure that is what you want.

Also, what is it about the Quick Rod that makes you think it wouldn't bring it recorded?

Remember to think of it totally raw here, too. With whatever mic or mics in whatever configuration, without EQ. Just bring up the faders. Is it swearing loudly over the bass and between the drums? And with EQ, too. What's it doing or not doing that, say, the 5150 is?

And how's it sit in context? Yeah, it might not be all that on its own, but bring the bass and the drums in there and is it falling into place? Both "how does it sound soloed?" and "fuck how it sounds soloed." mean something. And evaluate the response of the thing, too. How mean is it? I assume you want quick and aggressive, even with low tunings? (I could be totally off-base and you want slow and sludgy?) Is it a brass-knuckle punch to the taint when you hit an open E equivalent? Etc.

5150s are ubiquitous and on a relative scale of dirtcheapness. Brandfuckingnew the combos are $600. Used prices for the thingers are all over the dirtcheapmap, with plenty lower spectrum realm choices.

In light of this, and all of the lovewords you have uttered WRT the Splawnthing, i would probably alternatively suggest: starting a 5150 penny jar up.

The 5150 is a proper metalbeast, and personally, it is the only commercially produced amp that realistically i think i will own some day. But i think that once you owned one, you might find it less flexible for you than Ye Olde Splawne has been. And that you might miss El Splawno badly if you didn't have it anymore. I think you might be right that the Peavey makes the sound you want for your current band, but you have made a lot of other sounds too, and you might very well find that it may not be able to do all of that as effectively.

Work some financial wizardmagic and figure out the angle to allow having two amps, i say.

:idk:

I +1 everything everyone else said, and add: The 5150/5152/6505/6505+ is a one trick pony. The one trick it does is really fucking killer, but it only does the one thing. That's it... you can't has clean tones worth using, you can't have crunch tones worth using... and TBH for the slamz I think a VH140c would fit much better. Or anything SS, really.

This would be a cheap and doable solution for the toanes you want. It would suck to have to sell the QR.

They are all wrong, I think the QR should be sold.

Truthfully, I agreed with the answers above

SS might be the way. I recall seeing some demos of the dime 100 amp which is more or less a randall and they're pretty fucking cheap here so they must be giving them away in the states and I bet the resale on them is terrible so a bargain could await.

I suppose I'd regret selling the Splawn occasionally, but then not that often. Like I haven't been playing much guitar lately, other than just the jugga jugga stuff here and there. The last time I ever went, 'fuck yeah Splawn, you're the shit!' was 2010, so...

Well, what I'm going to do is bring my seven string over here to my folks' place and just try and try to get some br00tz diarrhea tone. And if that doesn't work, I'll start taking photos for craigslist. :eekass:

In troof, my memories of you talking sweet about the thing may be a solid two years old. If you just aren't feeling it nemoar, fuck it. You could well be able to dump it, grab a 5150, and have some dollar left over even. :idk:

Couldn't the Splawn help with you minor recording gigs? 5150 would probably help there too though... :idk:

Question re: the Splawn- have you tried hitting the clean channel, or the gain channel with the gain down low with some really violent sounding pedal? Get it to start breaking up noticeably on its own and then hurt it. Not a boost; get most of your juice from the pedal. I think this might actually work out to your advantage if you want harsh, mean, nasty toans. And it would probably give you a depth of control over what flavor of violence you wanted that the 5150 wouldn't.

Tony raises a good point re: recording gigs. The Splawn's a more versatile beast than the 5150 by, like, a lot. And given the proper pedal I don't doubt it could be made ugly. You will never make a 5150 pretty. Though you could score some good microphonage for the balance from selling a Splawn and scoring a 5150, VH140C, etc. :idk:

For recording gigs I've just been going direct and using Poulin shit. Because no one wants to sound like the Splawn anyway. Aw mayne...

Tomorrow I will make my decision.

Okay so I'm fiddling with the map here at home and it seems I can wrench a good tone out of it for what I'm doing. With the tried and true formula of a tubescreamer boosting... gear 2 with the gain maxed... bass is maxed (makes sense with the tubescreamer), mids and highs at 3 o' clock... I'd probably end up using Poulin shit on a recording but this will surely deliver live and at rehearsal. But fuck is there ever a lot of feedback!

Basically the fact that the guitar is floppy stringed at a tuning which is lower than I've ever used before kind of added the missing saturation.

GAS averted. :mexican:

Well, I made a clippy of the Splawn doing what I'm trying to get it to do...

http://soundcloud.com/geoffhodsman/splawnslamtonetest

I still think a Peavey would sound more pissed off in this application but I guess the tone works.

I think it sounds great. If you were to sell it though, get like a Recto or something really scoopy and kinda loose.

I HAET shipping stuff but I would love to keep the Splawn in the family. :) I also have a heavy duty roadcase to go with it. There is a slight bit of cosmetic damage from UPS though. A little dent on the front...

This is a 2007 one so it is a bit more conservative with the gain levels than previous and later versions... this might suit you well considering the stuff you play with your band! I give you map and case for... 1000$?
