Post teh tewbs
gig Mon, Friday and Saturday last week. Used Shiva on Monday, Devil Cat Friday and was playing the Shiva to go over shit for Saturday when out of no where the volume and gain started dropping. Check pedals and cables . If I powered off board and powered it back on it seems to come back to life for 30 seconds.

so troubleshooting I go, one pedal and cable at a time until I realized it was teh map... *gasp*

tewbs????

there are Winged C's in it now... I had Ruby's that were new so I popped in 2 power tubes and she roared back to life. gig is in an hour and I have to shower so no time to bias.

prop her up plug her in for sound check and.... ziiiip pop! :dukes:

now what :hypno:

luckily the band (November Rain) had their, well our, van there, even for local gigs its easy. we have a TSL and a 5150 in it for spares. but no foot switches so I used the TSL for the gig.

the pop was a fuse

Sunday I spent the day dicking around with tubes, had a spare winged C and put it in with another winged c that I pulled originally and it was working fine. I checked the bias, one side 29 MA the other side .17 ... uhhhh tube did not get hot... put both original winged C's back in and she fired up perfectly. no loss of gain or volume. only thing I could think was dirty sockets? used contact cleaner and cleaned the sockets running old tubes in and out of the sockets with contact cleaner on them. Since, I have been playing it each day and checking the bias and 31 MA both side each day. so far so good.

Bizarre. :hypno: If it does that again, I'd take it to a tech just to make sure everything's on the up-and-up. :idk:

That is the proper choice for EL34s, by the by, the Winged Cs. :tu: Been my favorite current production EL34 for ages.

Spare fuses are nice to have. I've blown a few before, on my Mark IV and AC30, so I try to keep spares for all my amps. It comes up every few years.

The TSL is a decent sounding amp, but the footswitches were built like shite- you may recall my stories re: that- so you're not missing anything there. I had one show up with switches pre-broken and screws pre-stripped so I couldn't even open the thing up. The amp's fine; I never got the forum hate about how it sounds so much worse than the DSL. They sound pretty much the damn same. The effects loop could get weird with certain processors that wouldn't do full wet, as the loop didn't either, so you'd get phase issues. That was my only beef with the thing besides the footswitch. Cheerfully used one as provided backline in a 1000-seat theater a few years back. Sounds how I remembered it sounding. Only took a few seconds to dial in.

Toob maps are some kind of mysterious wizard shit. Do you drag a surge protector around with you to gigs?

I will need to pick up some more of the winged C's, but they are climbing in price. Right now about 120 for a match pair.

Definitely keeping an eye out on the maps. She has a full blown practice tonight so will have a good idea where we stand.

I have Winged C's in my Laney, it came with them.

At one point I switched her to KT-77s. Went back to Winged C, and... ahhh. That was the sound. It took me back to when I was eighteen and I just bought the amp. So nice and brown. Definitely the better tube for the job.
