So it looks like the time may be coming soon where I will be playing bass for a gigging ska band (oxymoron), and I do not have a proper bass map.

I haven't looked into bass maplification in quite some time, is there anything out there I should be keeping an eye out for?

Like I didn't know about these, but I am pretty damn interested.

That looks a lot like an SVT-3 Pro clone to me at first glance, though 100W more. (Whatevs, when we're talking bassmaps.)

I'd go for a used GK 700RB or SVT-3 Pro for grittier tones or Markbass MK III if you like superclean. GK 400s can be had for fuckall, as can Ampeg B2Rs, but tone-wise I much prefer the SVT-3 to a B2R. I have used all three of the aforementioned with fine results. This is, of course, based on the new price of the Bugera (which I haven't even seen in a store, I admit. It may be a fine map. Dunno.) as you should be able to score any of the aforementioned for less than five bills, and they are as fine a bassmap as you could desire unless you want an SVT Classic or Mesa with four thousand tubes that weighs about as much as a mastodon.

Combos are their own thing.

What do you like toanwise, and what bass are you planning on slinging?

I picked up my Ashdown for next to nothing, it was a combo, (1-15) but converted it to a head and used a 2x10 cab. With the buying a new GK 2x10 cab, I was under $300 for everything. (Yea I am king at hunting out deals) I am surprisingly happy with the Ashdown

I always meant to try their stuff.

I know I can pull good stuff out of GK maps, and any Ampeg I have had a chance to play was awesumz. I usually like pretty gritty to stupofuzzedout bass toanes, but considering this is going to be for a Ska band I will need my loud ass pretty clean toanes. So really what I will need is a nice clean-but-loud amp that I can put a thick nasty fuzz in front of ...

Then any of my recommendations stand.

FWIW, I sold my Markbass 'cause it was too too goddamn clean. Like pristine clean all the time, no way to drive the thing at all. It does take pedals well though. I'm really an Ampeg girl at heart, I think.

Hmm, I don't think I would like THAT clean of an amp. I still like to get a little grit, even at my "cleaner" toanes :D .

I am heading to my local shop to go test out what they have there, but chances are the choices will be limited to Hartke and the Fender Rumble Series.
