Those edcor OT's look interesting and they're a good price. I've emailed them about shipping to the UK as I really want to do a 2 KT88 amp and this looks promising, especially at $93:
http://www.edcorusa.com/products/458-cx ... -4_2k.aspx

100W, 4.2K primary which probably isnt too far off the mark for a B+ of 540V and 2xKT88 although I need to read up on how to work this out.

Only real option I have here is the hammond hi-fi OT (1650NA) which is 4.3K and will run me £90 which is quite a mark up on $93!

/derail....

that PT looks pretty hot too. If the pair shipped runs for $220 or so then thats a winner since I'd be paying ~£100 for a similarly specced PT (500mA and slightly higher B+ but whatever)

Got my trannys today but the PT isn't the one I ordered... Was sent the HTS-5199

http://www.rjguitars.net/Transformers.html

Specs:
300-260-0-260-300 @ 300ma
6.3 @ 7.5A
5 @ 3 A

Should I send it back or use it anyway? If I go lower(compared to 280v that I wanted) I get a more crunchy sound right? Going higher gives me more headroom? (I think I read this on a forum somewhere)

So you ordered the HTS-9144?

You know, either one is probably going to be fine. But the one he sent might actually work out better for you.

In fact, because the amp is so high gain, you may want to use the 300v taps to get a little more headroom. I just realized actually, that the Hotcat schematic actually shows 321v there(don't know how i missed that before). Now that is probably just what was measured by the person who made the schematic, so doesn't necessarily show what the transformer actually is(it could indicate anything from about 260v winding to a 330v, depending on common US wall voltages). But, it is at least close.

So the 300v taps are probably going to be good for your build. In a high gain amp like this, you are going to want a little more headroom in the power section so that it stays slightly clearer. Too little voltage there and the amp might get too muddy when you go with lots of distortion and turn the amp up.

I would probably tape off the ends of the 260v taps so they can't touch each other or anything else, then just wind them up and zip tie them tucked away into a corner of the chassis for possible future use. And then i would just use the 300v taps for the build.

HA! so i was right that the having a little more voltage would give me a bit more headroom :D

anything you want to add to this (post on mapz lead dress)?
