My Hot Cat wasn't dark/bassy at all on the clean channel. It could get downright harsh if you weren't careful with the brilliance.

Are you A+ 100% sure that all of your cap values are right there? Might you have a 0.015uF cap off the V1 plate, instead of the 0.0015uF on the schematic? Or similarly a 0.1uF cap for the P.I. input rather than the 0.01uF on the schematic?

It just seems to me that with that 180pf across the volume and the cap values indicated on the schematic, that channel should actually be a bit bright/sparkley, not too bassy?

I still haven't played a real one yet, so perhaps one who has(Snaxo?) can confirm or deny this...? :idk:


I'll have to check tomorrow then. The clean top end is pretty sparkley and bright, it just seems to have a tad bit more bass then what I would like.

They all stack on top of each other so its not taking up a great deal of real estate and then all the secondaries are wired in series for the B+. Not the neatest solution but £30 for a 400VDC 480mA transfomer makes me not too worried.
The same company sells 0-35,0-35 trannies with 300VA and 500VA cores so if I dig the sound of 6550s at that plate voltage then I can get pretty much 1A of B+ to run 4 of them for not much monies :isay:

The description of the gain channel sounds about right. The speakers could definitely be the culprit. Those Hot Cats are basically made for V30 speakers.

I don't have it as I really don't trust my multimeter to handle large amounts of voltage/current :facepalm:

That would be checking the voltage with one side of the multimeter on the plate and the other side on ground?

Yup, the plate to ground voltage would be fine!
I guess it runs at about 400VDC with not much load?

Late as I just got the balls to poke my MM in my amp. (All the voltages checked out great :nods: )

I have 398v on the plates with no signal.

Interesting stuff thanks. Thats the sort of ballpark figure I can get from a 0-35,0-35 VAC toroid run into a voltage quadrupler :rawk:

I had a little taste of 400V a month or so ago. It wasnt the worst thing ever but I dont fancy doing it again.

I could run my amp at 16ohms with my 8ohm cab right? 6.6k would become 3.3k which is still plenty for a pair of EL34s right?
