I myself may be getting a 15, depends..

I suspect the current iteration of the 15 would be a bit burlier than my 30, as far as reliability is concerned.

B-sides, it's not as if I'd want a wildly different voicing. That Sound is, well, my sound. Problem being I have to gig with the damn thing. Which, chances are, means some boutiqueshit hacked-up version of that which will get me to roughly the same place without actually doing what an AC30 does, which is run everything at the bleeding fucking edge of its tolerances. Which is, unfortunately, why an AC30 sounds how it sounds. It's pretty well an awful design that's gonna break any minute and is doing it wrong. And that's why it sounds So Right. Very rock-and-roll. To "fix" it takes away some of its AC30ness depending on the fix, methinks. The idea is to get there-ish without something that'll randomly tell me "fuckoff, faggot glamrocker twat" at least until I'm offstage.

Honestly, I may keep the thing, suck it up and buy something else to gig with. I do, after all, own a NMV AC30.

I dunno snaxo, there are a lot of things that go towards making an AC30 sound the way it does.

Funky tonestack and angry phase inverter would be the two that i would say are the most important, for what i consider to be the amp's "calling card". :idk:

The tonestack does that odd sparkle middsy thing, and the phase inverter does that exploding violence thing when you wail on it.

IMO, the map doesn't *have* to operate close to self destruction for the Vox sound to come out of it. :idk:

Voxes kind of do, but also, the self destruction is (again IMO) largely doe to the inherent lesser longevity of those EL84s. And in the older Vox designs, the additional trouble maker in the EF86 preamp.

Maybe see if you can hunt down one of the octal Matchless jobbers, a Chieftain or summat? :idk:

Those amps are totally rad, IMO, but they also seem to lean a bit more towards the JCM thing than the AC30 thing. Even though they have the EL84s, the rest of them is basically like a JCM800 with tweaks. Granted the topologies of the AC30 and JCM800 are not grossly dissimilar anyhow, but i do feel that the Classics lean more towards the Marshall bit of the spectrum. :idk:

I'm okay with that. I'm merely an operator here acting on the best of my current knowledge. I'm all for a better way if I'm made aware of its existence.

Also, I would agree with Chris re: the Peavey Classics. More Marshally to my ears, and been there/done that.

Isn't there some fancypants store in NYC where you can pay to try out a fucktonne of fancymaps?

Might be something to consider, to attempt to narrow down what it is exactly that a map is going to need to do for to be the right thing for ye?

I had a Peavey Bravo for a good while and with the clean channel cranked it was pretty Vox-like... wasn't maniacally loud, either.

But alas, I do not know that area of the tonal spectrum very well.

There's a boutiqueyshoppe not too far from me. I'mma hit it up with my other guitarist after Christmas; he's been meaning to take a trip out there anyway.

They are small, they are in a VERY rough approximation, something like the crunchier little brother to 6L6s, that EL84s are to EL34s.

They have more bass friendliness than EL84s, in my experience. So they make a good choice for lower watt amps, as they can help bring some fullness back in to the circuit. For my purposes, they are a much better tube for getting bigger amp sounds out of littler amps.

They are also octal, which means that you have a whole world of funky amp designs that you can swing with them, like the ability to run 6L6s instead(like my current amp can), or the ability to run low enough voltages to swap in EL34s without rebiasing anything, like the Trainwreck Express maps do.

Breakup-wise, they breakup less smoothly than EL84s do. More smoothly than 6L6s maybe, but a bit of a rougher texture to them than the EL84s.

Cleanwise, they sparkle a little less in similar circuits, but it was a trade i was well willing to make, to acquire better low end and longer longevity. From my own amps, the change was about the same as going between modern JJ EL84s, and the much prettier old Silvania 7189s i was lucky to fall into. Obviously nicer in head-to-head battle, but without the A/B, i set the knobs just slightly differently and soon forgot about it. My current amp is bright and chimey as fuck, sometimes a bit too much so, honestly.

Erm, i am sure there is moar, but at the moment, i need to go seek fooding. :red:

If i think of moar i will poast moar.

I kinda heard that the small laney tube combos are Voxish, but I haven't heard one myself so :idk:

This in a nutshell. My rebel 20 has both and are blendable. I keep it at 50/50 or maybe a little 40/60 at time towards the EL84 side. BUt if I really want that American sound rather than Brit I will go to the 6v6 side.

Voxy front end mated to a 2x 6v6-based power section á la a Deluxe.

Does such a beast exist?

Chris's Hobo Map is the closest thing I know of.

I *think* that the Valvetech VAC 25 is possibly this same sort of design. I haven't seen the guts or schematic for one, but just trying to figure it out by the specs and the manner in which the website describes them, i would think it very possible.

I was just talking to Chris from my band about Valvetech the other day, actually.

He also offered to trade me his Super if I could find a good deal on an old Twin. Tempting, but not quite, in the end, what I want for my main map. (Though I heart and am prone to borrow the thing on occasion.)

I'm trying to figure out what the Dr. Z offerings are about. I like the few Zs I've spent time with and there's a dealer around here.

A lot of the Dr Z shit looks cool to me. And as far as boutiquers go, his prices used to be pretty great, though they seem to be climbing moar of late.

I suspect that you could make a Maz or Carmen Ghia do roughly what you wanted. Stang Ray is basically an EF86 channeled AC30. Z28 looks interesting to me.

Word on the street is roughly that you should expect loud.

If yer fancymapstore has fancy maps, they are likely to have some Zs in, i think. They do unique things with the EQs and voicings. Not everyone will love them. You might want to try some out to see how you feel about them. Some people like the mixing of Fender/Marshall/Vox that they do. Some don't. :idk:

I would DEFINITELY aim to try out some of their cabs though, and check out that G12H30/V30 combo. I rather like the way it sounds myself.
