Hmm. Even the DS1 has way more than it needs, IMO, especially into a never-quite-clean amp like an AC30. You definitely use more scuzz than i do. :idk:

You could try to attenuate, but i don't know if that option could ever be expected to solve a muddiness or low clarity issue. Every attenuator i have ever met has made both worse, by the time it is cutting enough volume to do what i am looking for.

What about something like a plexiglas shield/baffle? That might cut enough for what you need. Easy enough to experiment with. :idk:

The plexi shield has come up in conversation before. It's an option. I think my problem here is that I want something that sounds like it's going to detonate at something approaching reasonable human volumes, and I'm not sure how do-able that is.

I've posted this before, but this is a pretty good example of where I'd like to be live, all multitracking with two separate boosts aside. Or the fact the bass and synth aren't on this... hell, even better as a guitar tone example. I'm using the OCD and the Synth Wah for dirtying up the AC30, turned way up.

That's my bitch with the 30. I heart it, truly. If only I could drive it harder with the band. Recorded and for cleans/mid gain it delivers all the goods and then some on its own. I'd said something about A/Bing it with a Shiva for high gain the other day... Now granted my "high gain" is not a metal player's high gain... And I'd just use a 15 were it not for the fact I need cleans at volume.

...and BTW, that's as much as I'd want/use for conventional-ish distortion tones. Otherwise we're talking fuzz pedal/Geiger Counter/bitcrushed fuckery. That's where I'm at for what I'd want for a normal higher gain tone.

...which I fear is something I may not be able to achieve live and may have to compromise or use a multi-amp rig. It is what it is. :?

Also. The Suhr Riot is purple. Purple.

Listening to your clip there again, you might find use in a Riot. BUT. you might also find the Riot possesses too smooth of a gain grain, as it has been tuned specifically to address that aspect in other high gainish pedals.

It sounds to me, like more of what you are looking for is going to be a fuzz.

You might actually like a modded rat. You might actually like a stock rat even. Or a stock Turbo Rat(the LED clipper one).

You might get good use out of a Fuzz Face, honestly. It has the edge and more of the clarity than you will generally find in a fuzz, also cleans up somewhat with the guitar volume.

You might be able to get a modded Big Muff to do what you want. Either a homebrew with the tonestack mods, or something like EH's tone wicker muff. As with the Suhr, you might find the distortion grain too smooth for your purposes. But the Big Muff can be pretty flexible with that, especially if it has some clipping section options.

Also, as i have mentioned before, everyone should have a Big Muff and a Rat anyhow... so. :huzzah:

:idk:

I thought about this some more today whilst playing with the one i built.

I do think that you should give a Rat a bit of a looksee. :isay:

I like rats.

So that is doable.

The actual tone referenced is the OCD boosting the AC30, cranked way up, and even still, you'd rule out the attenuator option?

I really don't like attenuators, so i am probably not the best person to ask about them. :idk: By the time they are killing enough volume to make the difference i need, they are cutting all kinds of other stuff and changing the way the amp feels, as well.

If there is any way around it, i personally will avoid attenuators. They change too much more than just volume for my tastes. Plus, they are generally a bit expensive at it to boot.

Anyhoo, as for the Rat, i usually run mine at just 8:30-9:00 on the gain, for a pretty solid distortion sound for my needs. It has a LOT more on tap though. I think anything above 12:00 would likely be something that you could work with.

Rat+AC30 is also well known to be one of those super awesome classic combos. Lots of the Blur (fantastic guitar sounds) stuff is that, and so is, IIRC, the Refused' Shape Of Punk To Come, which incidentally, your reference clip reminds me a bit of. :idk:

I was listening to Shape Of Punk To Come the other day. I could get on with that tone. And yeah, that's Rat + AC30 IIRC as well.

The mid switch seems to change the midrange response and its aggressiveness/tightness. Also I don't find the pedal to be too terribly smooth. It has gain, but it's definitely not a singing sustain kind of gain. :idk: It's definitely more of a rhythm pedal than a lead tone pedal.

I like my OCD on my Marshalls and Egnater, but do not like it so much on the V22 I am using right now, which is more AC15is than my other maps.

I do have an attenuator, a weber mass or mini mass or something, and have setone up for a friends AC30 which he loves on that. Mine has a low/high adjustment ahh it's the masslite:
https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/masslite.htm

with the adjustments I can get what I'm looking for and drive the el34's on my marshalls nicely. I got it used for like $100 used. My friend with the ac30 got the 50w mini mass I think.

The Mini Mass intrigued me when I looked into it. It's definitely an option.
