Re: I'm thinking to getting a new fuzz (Chris D content)
Dope thread.
Oi Chris, a question has occurred to me that I imagine for which you are the ideal answerererererer. What would be a good fuzz voiced sort of like a mix of a Ruski Big Muff and the nasty gnarl of the Boss HM-2? Sort of.. Not quite fuzz but super burly, jagged distortion with a lot of "warmth" to it. Still good for beating on power chords. I am more or less looking for wall of sound type fuzz that has the option to get super fucking sludgy with some knob twiddling.

Re: I'm thinking to getting a new fuzz (Chris D content)
Pretty much nothing sounds like an HM-2 but an HM-2, IMO. I would go straight for that if i wanted that sound. They exist for mad cheap on the used market too. Someday i intend to build one with no knobs, just resistors so it would be as if set to the classic 10-10-10 settings. It is not really worth it to build them though, as they are complex enough that you could never really do a one off for less than it would cost to buy the real deal. Another one that is kind of rad is the Boss FZ-2. It is like that doom sound in a box, but can actually be set for other sounds too. One friend of mine uses it for a buzzy garage rock sound actually. They are also available way cheap. Other than that some of the big muff mods can sound pretty cool, but the distortion is pretty much always smoother. The USA big muff is pretty fucking solid though. And again, can be found relatively cheap. Actually, as i think of it, i think maybe you should try to track down an FZ-2. That is definitely a cool pedal.

Would I be remiss in saying you could find those for fifty a piece if you looked around? This is off the top of my head, and I could be wrong.

Re: I'm thinking to getting a new fuzz (Chris D content)
HM-2 can usually be found for $35-40, about 90% of those ones will be missing a knob(i.e. at least one will have been kicked off at some point in the pedal's life) which is just part of that pedal's charm and mythology. Seeing as the pedal is pretty much only useful with the last three knobs dimed, missing knobs are not a big deal. The FZ-2, should be available for $50-ish out there in Usedland. Some folks try to swindle more from them, but i wouldn't go much over $60 myself, even though the pedal is pretty rad.

I know the Big Muffs aren't expensive either; I just keep forgetting to buy one. All told that wouldn't be a bad haul for a buck fiddy. At least if you like face-raping distortion. Which you should, if you don't.

In troof, Big Muffs are so ubiquitous that anyone who is friends with a pile of musicians could probably acquire one on the forfrees/forbeers. Only slightly less commonly found than the DS1.

DS1 actually sounds good-ish on a bass guitar.

DISAGREE. Actually, that is how i acquired mine (for free). My bass player in the fastrock band bought it for potential bassfuzz, and then abandoned it in my basement. I really really dislike that pedal.

Re: I'm thinking to getting a new fuzz (Chris D content)
I bet an HM-2 would rape on bass if you could mix in a clean signal.
I would honestly pay the extra money for one to be custom built if it were to be doubleboxed with something glitchy with RAPEFACE FUZZ on the enclosure.

I too want an HM-2.
We had one around in high school but we destroyed it, before we ever understood its true power.

Re: I'm thinking to getting a new fuzz (Chris D content)
Thats the motherfucker. I was going to prototype a booteek version to sell for far too much money to the doom crowd but there isnt any point and and its a complicated pedal anyway.
In a shoot out between the 2 pedals the behringer is damn close and they sell for £17 here whereas you'll be lucky to get an FZ-2 for £60 off ebay.
