Re: It's ALIVE
Also, for realz, i need to get a better way to do clearcoating. That shit will be the bane of my existence for EVER. I think i will have to experiment with auto paints or maybe epoxy or something. I so fucking hate clearcoating, it always fucks me over somehow.

Re: It's ALIVE
I made some random clips but more for testing porpoises than demo ones. Very repetitive and not terribly interesting to hear. It gets heavy as balls boosted with the timmy though. I was pleasantly surprised by that. There is wayyyyyy more low end available in the circuit than probably it should have. Wayyyy more gain too, but it is the low end where it gets into troublemaking. In general though it is kind of a weird design for a kind of a simple task, which is why i am curious to see if tor gets along with it or not. I certainly wandered off from the big muff topology in a pretty solid manner in drawing it up.

Re: It's ALIVE
Honestly I only got to dick with it for about 10 minutes, I when I was setting up for the gig. it's on my 1st board now, and I'll say this, fucking beautiful. I hit the switch and gorgeous fuzz came out. I didn't move and knobs for about 5 minutes, just tweedling around, then I dicked with loud and fuzz a bit, but had to work on the PA, I didn't get a chance to use it in our setlist Saturday and today I was sick as a dog, but I will run it though it's paces tomorrow at practice. I'm putting picktar of my split board in the pedal board pics thread it will show the settings I really liked.

Also, I thought it sounded pretty much Rusky Muff also. I know you said you strayed quite a bit from the design, but whatever the straying was was wonderful.

Re: It's ALIVE
Chris, that is legit. You could probably make a little biz out of doing that. Love the blue painter's tape.

Re: It's ALIVE
Hahaha. Yeah, i can see my ALL CAPS LEGIBILITY handwriting a looking a bit serial killer precise. My regular handwriting looks like that of a crazy person (quelle suprise?) but my capstext is definitely shades of crazy plus dangerous. That and ridiculous shipping boxes, which are becoming sort of a habit for me now... Anyhow. I am glad that you might find it useful. I felt that it was muff-flavoured myself, but it is really soooo soo different in circuit topology that i started to feel, that maybe what i heard as the "big muff sound" might be a little different than what other folks hear as the bigmuff sound. Topology-wise, this circuit is actually closer(in a very basic sense) to one of the old Marshall distortions like the Guv'nor or Shredmaster. I just fucked with the clipping and how it shapes the highs/lows to the point that it doesn't act like those at all. It is interesting as a design to me, because it will do (what i hear as) big muff like fuzz sounds, but it is also *almost* capable of doing guvnor/shredmaster type things too. It isn't exactly there, because i arranged the clipping for a bit more of a rough (what i hear as "fuzz-like") sound, while i feel that the marshall pedals clip the signal in a smoother softer(and more compressed) sort of way. Conceivably, the addition of a clipping switch would be possible, to allow it to go between modes, but there was just not any room left in that box for that sort of thing. Maybe if there was no space for a battery and the footswitch was moved to the bottom edge... but there is no way with everything that is in there now.

Re: It's ALIVE
I would actually love to be able to do that. But it is reallyfuckingdifficult to make any money doing it, especially on a small scale. Pretty much impossible for one-offs unless you can afford to start by dumping a few hundred dollars into bulk parts stock orders. And blue tape is one of the most finest things that ever was. I use it for fuckingeverything. I was actually thinking, if i ever have a business, it will most likely be Blue Tape ...something. Engineering maybe. Or possibly, Contraptions. That sort of idea.

Re: It's ALIVE
Also, now that you have it, i can poast the final mockup i did for it: It printed up pretty close i thought, just a little definition lost on some of the text and whatnot when printed at real life size, which is awfully small actually. But for the most part it came together okay. I really need to figure out a better clearcoating technique though. Nothing pisses me off more than battling with clearcoat. This one was a little easier/better than the two i built for devin in that aspect, but that clearcoat shit was still the only thing that i was genuinely displeased with. Everything else, i thought actually came out pretty well.

Re: It's ALIVE
Case in point, one of the clips i made while i was waiting for clear coat to dry: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... D=11123020Worth noting there, that is just one track, into a shitass Crate GX15R, with the shittiest thin-sounding cheap garbage crate speaker ever made, into a notgreat Shure PG58. I have not had anything sound so massive through that setup. The cleanish part is just the neck pickup with its volume down a little. I like how flicking the pickup switch made it go SHWOON. It sounds a little like gain/feedback but it is not, more like the sound you get if you hit the neck from behind, mechanical forces rather than magnetic feedbacks. But i do like the teef this pedlol has. If tor didn't want it, i was just going to put it in a box for myself anyhow. Now i will have to build another one from scratch i guess.

Oh man wish I still had the note for my Timmy and Mastotron clones.
Most entertaining instruction manual ever.

Re: It's ALIVE
I remember one line that was like,"my favorite setting for [the mastotron] is all the knobs turned completely to the right."
Which is a good point, as that is a fun noise.
