I will ship one if you want. Though, by then the cost would not be very... efficient.

HM-2's go on ebay for 30-40 quid here anyway so I might just wait for a cheap one to turn up. Nick over on HCFX is doing a run of PCBs with a mids pot on so I might pick one up to tinker with.

I was at the guitar store near my house today and they had an HM-2 for forty bucks. I may go acquire an HM-2 tomorrow. :nods:

You probably should.

You know, all the rhythm guitars for Vesication are recorded, and they are all layered 5150 and HM2. I could make an HM2 only mix. It is fucking gnar sounding when I solo the HM2, but my guitarists still want to sound like themselves.

Well, I have an HM-2 now.

It's rather unpleasant sounding. The low EQ takes it from super-thin to wooly mess, and the "high" EQ seems to be centered around 1k. Preposterous amounts of gain. And yes, if you turn the low and high controls up all the way, it makes even a Tele into an AC30 sound like Entombed. :hypno:

So yeah, this'll wind up on my board so I can relieve my Geiger Counter of uglyfuzz duties and have it go back to making broken robot noises like it should.

Also, I'm going to give this a spin on bass in a bit, as I brought it home with me for the evening.

Oh, and the "Low" control is centered around 87hz.

The "High" one is actually two bands on one control: one centered around 1300hz and the other around 960hz.

The EQ section boosting those three places has a massive bit to do with the Swedish Death Metal sound. There is some slightly funky clipping in there too, but the EQ is huge.

Hah, so I was kinda right re: the "high" EQ. It is a thickass slab of midrange, that. Both controls full up is very much "that sound"; it's rather hard to mistake for anything else.

Here's a bit on bass. J-bass with EMGs tuned to C# standard with rather dead strings --> Sansamp Bass Driver DI. Sansamp controls are the same throughout: level 10:00, blend noon, treble 3:00, bass 2:00, presence 12:30, drive 12:00.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13184331/Bass_HM2_Test.mp3

First bit is clean, second bit has the HM-2 with the level @ noon, both EQ knobs full up, gain around 10:00-ish. The second has a somewhat more usable tone with the level and bass around 1:00, treble around 11:00 and the gain in the same place.

:isay:

When you mentioned funky clipping, were you referring to the EQ section? 'Cause at least on bass, turning up the EQ seems like it's overloading something a bit; it's a bit more controllable with the EQ backed off and seems less gainy- slightly, or at least less clipping into even more clipping- that way.

You could very well be hearing the EQ boost smashing into its opamp some(lots) and clipping.

The clipping i was talkin' 'boot is an array that shows up somewhat frequently in various Boss heavy distortions. It is pre-EQ, a combination of germanium diodes in series with the signal plus standard silicon hard clipping to ground. It does kind of a terrible grind-squash thing. That bit has a fair amount to do with why it sounds fuzzlike. And it does lend an element to the "molten lava" grindy thing that Cam mentioned.

In combination with the capable-of-quite-excessive-boost-amounts built into the EQ, you get: violence.

Innerestin'. Pushing the EQ does seem to make it go "I cannae clip no more, Cap'n! I'm clipping as hard as I can!" :snax: Which other Boss pedals have a similar thing going on? It actually reminds me a bit, at less extreme settings, of a DS-1, but less shitty. Or, at least, a better flavor of shitty. It doesn't really sound like a Metal Zone at all to me.

It does do something related to the DS1, in that it seems to be capable of hitting the rails of its powersupply. Which is roughly/kindof when the signal being transmitted is essentially of a higher voltage than the power supply can swing to reproduce. The DS1 is extra horrible for sounding like that, and it is one of the things that i hate the most about that pedal.

I agree that the HM-2 seems much less horrible about it all. In the HM2 it comes across as more of a compressionviolence to me than as a clearly incorrect design decision. I actually think that the funky germanium/silicon clipping is likely there largely to reign in this very sort of thing.

As far as other pedals that do similar-to-HM2 stuff, i don't know that there really are any. I do kind of consider it an iconic sort of fuzz sound all its own. There are other pedals that i have seen the same clipping section in(though my brain is sleepy right now and stubborn i suppose, doesn't seem to care to recall them. But i have seen it several times in various pedlols.).

An interesting observation I made with mine, when I dialed in a good tone with a moderately charged battery, switching to an AC adapter engaged ultra death blast mode. Like the sound coming out was indecipherable.

When I go home I'll do one of the HM2 mixes.

I could do it today as I'm not working, but I don't fucking feel like it. I'll just stay here and solder all day. :red:

I have an old 70's Ross phaser that sounds perfect with a battery, finest phaser tones ever, Put and AC adapter either with a 9v battery adapter or the little miniplug and it loses all victory.

I forgot to mention but about 6-7 months ago I acquired an HM-2 in a fit of drunken madness crossed with ebay. It sounds like total dog shit run into a laney. I've yet to try it with my superbass but I'm trying to not get too attached to that amp as I want to sell it so I can put the cash money into building new toys and repairing my AOR.

I seem to have had the best luck with it into the cleanest of cleans.

It sounded like nothing too great going into my Laney either.

I done seen a guy on youtube sounding awesome with it into his 5150 though.

I'm using a GH100TI which has some pretty extreme voicing and early cold clipping stages which I guess it doesnt play well with. The input stage of the low input is a 10k cold clipper so boosting it with something like the HM-2 is going to produce all sorts of wacky dirt tones.
