Sort of. You kind of have to like the way open toms sound. I actually hate they way they sound, too flat. :red:

But yeah, that is a classic technique. Lots of those super tight disco/funk sounds in the 70s were recorded with mics crammed all up in the toms and slammed with compressors.

You also can get a surprising amount of cymbal bleed through the tom heads, which can sort of defeat the purpose of the technique in a metal band. Basically the mics are pointing straight at the cymbals(though the ones in the shot look like side addressing mics, so i guess they are mic'ing the shells?), so it is not really surprising i guess.
