Post Re: building a home studio
I concur with Snaxie on the Yamaha monitors.

I have HS80Ms, and I love them. Although, they're monitors that actually sound good, so some people are against them. And those people have a point... monitors aren't supposed to be rich, full, or have a pleasant bass and treble bump. They're supposed to be accurate. But, at your experience level, you'd do best to get monitors that do sound good... at least with the HS80Ms, because they don't make everything sound good... just things that actually do sound good.

IMO, YMMV, etc...

I actually think NS10s sound good, to be honest, at least with a sub. Which either says my raw tracks sound good or my taste in audio is straight from Midrange Hell. Both are probably true.

The last time I heard the big KRKs was against some Yamahas and I thought they were scoopy and boomy in comparison.

Making a decent sounding recording ain't rocket surgery; you can go far with a couple decent mics, preamps that STFU and get out of your way and something to monitor on that tells you what you're hearing.

At least, until you try to record a drum kit. Then Shit Just Got Real, Yo. Actually, that's not that hard, just that there's a lot more to take into account and it's not so simple as "stick a 57 half an inch off the grill at the edge of the dustcap".

Everything is EQ. Mic placement is king. But I, and some of the rest of us, could digress forever on this topic!

I'm still trying to find my favorite placement for the OM2 on the H30. I think I like it a bit further off the grill.

Where do you have it placed? Just curious.

I have no dedicated place yet. I really haven't had a chance to use it too too much for cabs. I usually start off the cap like two inches off the grill and end up fucking around with it from there. I feel like it wants a bit more volume thrown at it then what I am giving it though, but that is probably more the tube amp's doing.

As good a place to start as any. Re: volume- I suspect a little from column A, a little from column B. I'm just a devoted amateur, but I feel like I get the best results when I'm more generous with volume in the room than gain on the mic pre.

GODDAMNIT.

I am getting pissed off. I DI'd some guitar tracks, and am running them through Pouling Hybrit. I am using Catharsis IRs, and every time I go to render it, it is nothing but silence. I go to playback the tracks and they are silent, until I reload the IRs into the cabs again. I might just seperate the preamp and the impulse software, I am not sure. But goddamn is it annoying.

Get an external hard drive and back everything up. They're cheap now and it's worth it.

I don't understand what the problem/fix was?

You were running both within Reaper? Or are you using something as standalone?

Poulin has a Hybrit Preamp VST, and a Hybrit Stack VST that has "cabs" to load impulses on. It also has LeCab. Originally I was using the "Stack" loaded with impulses but it was being super glitchy. I ended up using the Preamp VST running into LeCab with the same impulses and the glitchiness was no more. This was in Reaper.

Yeah, to be honest I am not entirely sure what was going on there.

Also, your package arrived today while I was out for lunch. Now I can't pick it up from USPS until Monday. I blame my roommate for not staying home and going to play ... basketball.

FUCKING NCAA MAKING HIM WANT TO PLAY BASKETBALL.

I was wondering w(hen)tf that thing was going to get there. I would have guessed yesterday.

Let me know how that shit works out for you. Neither of them is as pretty as i would have liked, but that is due in part to choosing the boxes i did(bit tight inside on the mastotron for making it look pretty in there), the control layout i did(you will see, and hopefully not hate the layouts), and in the main part, to trying to finish them in a blah-ass extended window of cold humidity. If we do more builds, i will do them differently, and i will finish the boxes way before i build the guts into them. :red:

Be honest, did you just put one knob on each side of the box? Cause that would be hilarious-awesome.

And then put the footswitch on the bottom facing the floor. That way, the top is completely clean, allowing you to literally just stomp the box as opposed to aiming your steps.

I just innovented that shit.

Fucking brilliant man. You know, if you used a relay switching circuit with a momentary switch, you could mount the whole lid on a spring, and have it so that when you smushed the thing flat with your foot it would make the momentary connection to make the switch happen. (That way the pedal could lie flat, as opposed to the funky angle it would be at with a standard 3PDT sticking out the bottom.)

This just got serious.

There must be SOME novelty pedal I can have built this way. Like a De-Volt or Killswitch pedal.

AND THEN CALL IT THE KILLSWITCH ENGAGE!
