Post No idea how... n00b question concerning my interface
I have no idea how one would... set up the interface so audio of whatever is in my DAW already can be sent to the headphone outs on this sucker. This looks like a question for Snaxie?

I'm having a drummer over to record his stuff to some backing tracks and click, but I don't know how the hell I'm gonna get it into his headphones. The only other drummer I've recorded down here is myself, and I did ghetto shit like put the backing tracks on an iPod and play to them, then shift the recording into sync with the grid. I think I should be doing it the right way to record other people...

If you can get sound out of your headphones from your inputs, but not from your computer, please go through the following steps:

1. Have you got your Saffire PRO selected as the Audio Input/Output device on your computer and/or your software? If you are unsure, please consult the manual for the software that you are using.

Maybe this is why. The audio outputs out of the ass end of my computer into the speakers. I don't have nice monitors that hook up into the outs of my interface. I just use the audio coming out of my computer, for mixing and just generally hearing things.

So if I'm not mistaken... if I want the sounds in my DAW to come out of the headphone outs on the interface, I have to set the computer's audio output to the Focusrite? And then... I'd... have to have my PC speakers plugged into it? Uhm, I don't think they'll do that... not at least without some adapters (1/8 stereo jack on the speakers, a pair of 1/4 mono inputs on the interface).

What.

Ghettofy it, then. I did that for some time until I got my monitors.

I cut the ends off a set of RCA cables, cut the ends off a guitar cable, and wired them together. Hooked them into my stereo receiver, and instantly had sound from my interface. You can do the same with a 1/8" jack, but there's one less wire to worry about. Just connect both the bare wires from the guitar cable to the bare wire from the 1/8" cable, and the not bare wires to the not bare wires, and you have sound. Right to left you don't have to worry about, if it's backward, flip them at the interface. :nods:

Ghettofy it... so I can use the PC speakers as monitors coming out of my interface?

I have managed to tell Reaper to send the audio to the interface, and am having playback out of the headphone out on the interface now. I wasn't expecting it, and the knob was cranked, so now my ears are very sore. This is progress. However I can't seem to tell it to send audio to out to more than one place at a time? For instance, two sets of headphones, as there are two headphones jacks on the interface. They are respectively assigned outputs 5+6 and 7+8 when headphones are plugged in. That would work. I and the drummer would hear what's going on. But it only lets me have one. I have dicked around with this and I can either have audio exclusively out of my PC speakers or exclusively out of the headphones. I at least would like to hear the computer's content through both headphones!

Here's an image of Reaper currently set to send the audio output to the first headphone jack on the interface.

You need to set your output range allow 4 channels. Those extra 2 channels will be your headphone output. In your DAW, route your master channel to all 4 outputs, or if you like, create a separate track and route it to 3 and 4. That's how it works with my interface, anyway. I'm not at my PC right now so I can't be sure if this is the proper setup or not.

But, if I'm right, you should be able to create a separate mix of tracks for the headphone out this way... which could work to your advantage in any tracking situation.

And yes, that's what I meant by ghettofying it.

I wish I knew how to make it give me four channels. :wall:

I will check my settings at home, I'm getting input and output to my phones. The software for my interface has a separate mixer to click on for the phones mix, it fucks me up on each tune and it initially all comes out mono and I have to remember to pan left and right, let me check my reaper settings though see if I can be of any help.

The "Output Range" dropdown in Reaper's audio control window.

Set the "first" to "Line 5/6" (looks like it is already there) and the "Last" to "Line 7/8". That should allow all four to be used, i think.

Then if you are still only getting sound out of one of them, go into you master channel sends dialog in Reaper (right next to the master fader) and add a send for the output that is not currently getting a signal.

Alternately, if you don't want to send the whole mix, you could just put the send on whatever channel or channels you do want in there.

IIRC can't you control the level and such of each out on the pro? So like, everyone could wear monitored headphones?

I think snaxie did it once, or I am smoking crack. Both are equally probable.

This sounds like a routing thing in Windows/Reaper, neither of which I use. My apologies. In Logic, all I have to do is have the Saffire connected and since it's my default interface, all audio from the DAW routes to there; whatever is playing back is in the headphone outs as well. If I want to route everything on my 'puter through it, I select it in System Preferences as my audio out.

For live purposes, I assign the backing track to outs 1/2 and send them to the board, with the click assigned to 3/4 (it's in mono, so it goes to 3), which is only on in the drummer's in-ear mix.

Yes, you can. Or rather, you can in stereo pairs. The pairs default to L/R of the odd- and even-numbered outputs. 1 is left, 2 is right, 3 is left, 4 is right... Etc.

Most of the routing fuckery at the moment we're doing on the Yamaha 01V, where everyone has their own in-ear mix on the aux sends plus a main mix on the... mains. :dukes:

And seeing as the drummer's supposed to arrive right about now... the timing couldn't have been better. :nods: We're recording two kick drums with triggers, four rack toms sharing a pair of Shures... big kit. :mwahaha:
