I usually multi-mic everything that's not an individual drum (and even then....) and don't use much EQ. This kinda explains it, as save for drum kit applications (as I only have one of them, but they shine there wherever I've stuck 'em) I'll generally throw that up along with something that hypes the source (ribbon, D112, NT5, 57/Beta 58, etc. that I've had...) and blend the two to taste. So yes, plays very well with others. By the time it's getting into the bit of top end boost it has- and even then that's not much- we're outside the fundamental of anything and safe from mid honk as well; you'd probably call it "presence" or "air" or something like that. It sounds like what it's in front of and has a bit of shininess to it, but only a bit.

The low cut filter, incidentally, rules. It's not an obvious low cut, but it will kill proximity effect and/or plosives on vocals. It does the latter equally as effectively as a pop screen.

Yes that peak looks like it's higher than most things that are potentially unpleasant, it's just going to add some presence that you'd maybe end up adding anyway if it weren't there...

MXL990! And it is supposed to get a little nicer on the bottom end if you do some cap swaps innit. When i get a chance, i intend to try it out on Tor's 990s. Have to get a couple fancypants caps though.

Also, what frequency is the low cut on the Shure set at?

I'm a fan of the 990, 'tis great for the money.

The man knows a good thing when he sees one.

I like it on my V30 clone, and the OM2 on the BL80 clone. But, the combination definitely sits more in the highend, which honestly I think might work out better when it comes to a mix situation. I am picking up an Audix i5/SM57 somewhere here in the near future though, which I might put on the V30, move the 990 over to the BL80 and then keep the OM2 for more vocal and acoustic uses.
