Two more Avantone ATOM tom mics here. So now I have a pretty red mic for every drum on a five piece kit.

I already had one of these mics, but it is the older generation one with no shock mount, like this:



I'm going to do a little compare to see if the two generations sound any different, then maybe I'll record a track with my newly complete drum micing setup.

Nice dood. Interesting frequency chart for those, almost like a kick drum mic with the pimpy bass and general scoopdyness..

Yes, the one I've already recorded with is extremely bassified. I am going to brew a cup of coffee now and get to work!

I wonder how they compare to the Audix drum mics? I'm only familiar with the D6, and it's pretty scoopyscoopy.

Well the new ones sound great! They have a good deal more definition than the first gen one, which is comparatively muddy.

Here's a sample... just the toms and Avantone MONDO kick mic. No EQ, the only compression is on the master track:

The new ones are on a 12 and 16 inch toms. The older one is on a 10 inch, and you can probably hear the difference. I figured the ten inch would need the least definition.

I recorded a song this afternoon so I'll upload that too once I've made guitar tracks.

I'm just listening on my laptop right now, but I swear the 10" sounds duller with the other two sounding more open and... like a tom should.

Yeah. It's so bad when I use it for a smaller tom, though I do miss the little bit of extra twang that's missing.
