In all seriousness, as much as I don't use mine that often, they're something you come to appreciate more after using a bunch of stuff that's different/"better", at least for certain applications. It's a totally un-magical, pedestrian, utilitarian thing that just plain works, often because of that same midrange that can read as honky, nasal or shrill. Which may be the case, but hey- the snare cuts through, so who's laughing now?

Messing with it, it really plays well with the 990 for recording the Vox, both right up on the cab (no room mic) but the two seemed to really pick up the room.

57 and a big condenser is generally a recipe for good toan that gives you a lot to play with in the mix re: "color" and frequencies. I'd guess it's mostly the 990 picking up the room? And did you have 'em on the same speaker or separate? Watch for phase. I like the multiple mics thing, but I try and make a point of monitoring with everything on and balanced level-wise before I hit record.

Also: still needs drums and bass.
