I did one today.

I pointed my Audix i5, Avantone ADM, and SM57 (with the cord for the mic's impedence) at my snare, all in the same fashion...

I recorded the snare getting smacked. I processed the snare in a manner much like I would on the recording.

There is also a room mic.

See, school is a drag, and while I'm out here doing it, I keep dreaming of getting all up in my band's full length. How I'll mic what, what I'll do to things in the box, etc. And the mic I point at the snare has been a subject of much personal deliberation.

Thoughts so far: i5 is thick yet bright on top. ADM has a lot going on in the hi-ish mids, which I tend to really dig once the rest of the kit is there. It is also red, which puts it a step ahead of the pack. SM57 is really nasal, which I... am kind of really digging. Leaning towards the 57 or ADM.

I will post it here this weekend.

I look forward to hearing it. Did you do it drumsoloed, or with bandparts on it?

One thing i have found is that for snare mics, what i like is really difficult to pick out with the drums only. It is in the full mix that what i have and what i need from a snare mic, becomes superclear. :idk: A lot of that is probably my specific snare also, as it is a bit strange in its tuning and ringing character.

I fully just put the snare in my hallway, miced it, and hit it. So we can only really assess the differences between each mic...

I agree with you that it's only really a piece of the puzzle, we need to do this with A) the whole kit and B) Other instruments. But it's still something...

Right on, i am into it. I am definitely a big fan of such undertakings. So weird how differently different mics "hear" things.

There's the demo.

Each twenty seconds is the same take on each mic, first i5, then Avantone, then 57.

Then I did the same roll on three of them back to back twice over for an easy compare.

I do hear a good difference but it takes a listen, and it's much harder to hear when the room mic is on (I muted it when I mixed this down)

The Avantone is the brightest, significantly, the 57 the darkest. The 57 has a mid thing going on that's pretty identifiable. The i5 sorta splits the difference. It's full sounding, and nice and crisp up top, but not as bright as the Avantone, which is very cutting but it doesn't seem to have the body the others do. Interesting. I'd say the i5 is the most "full-frequency" of the three, having a bit more low end than the 57, with the 57's focus in the mids and the Avantone's in the highs.

Maybe we should move this to one of the recording fora?

The Avantone strikes me as having a 'pre EQed' sound. It has as you said, a lot of brightness, in the high mids. When recording an entire kit with it it was like 'oh, and there is the snare sound'.

The i5 is a pretty gnar sound I guess but something about isn't jiving with me as much as the other two. It is a fair deal darker.

57... I like that honky mid.

Let us move it to that forum.

Innnnnnteresting. The Avanatone definitely has lots of low-cut happening. It strikes me as flatter, and i would be paying close attention to whether or not i felt it had enough snare fundamental note in a band mix. I have lost similar sounding snares(the CAD TSM411s that i have are actually a very similar EQ vibe) in mixes before.

The Audix sounds kind of massive in the low mids, and i feel like, if it would cut in whatever mix, it would make for a nice large heavy snare sound.

The SM57 definitely has that thing going on, where you think something maybe... bad? is going on with the midrange, but like with amps, it might wind up being, counter-intuitively, something totally useful in a mix. It also retains what seems to me to be a healthy lower midrange, though not as much as i hear in the Audix. The mid-mids seem sharper than the i5 though.

Would be interesting to hear them mixed up proper bandlike, methinks. :huzzah:

From what I have read, the i5 is basically and SM57 with a smoother mid-spike and a bit more going on in the low end, and based on these snare clips I'd say that is a fairly accurate description. I feel like the i5 is picking up more than it really needs to, and a lot of the thickness is going to blend a bit more into the mix.

that was an interesting test--- i'm another voter for the 'in context' listen. that snare sounds SO not like any snare i've ever recorded though.. is that set up for metal- cause i spect it's really cranked and mebbe even a piccolo?

IIRC Geoff does use a piccolo, or is at least a fan of the sound.

But I don't know shit about drums so I could just be remembering wrong.

Aint no piccolo... Pearl Sensitone Elite 14" x 6.5"... but I do tune it rather tight, because all I do is play blastbeats and the rhythms that go in between blastbeats. :dick:

The Vesication EP I posted before has the Avantone on the snare. That EP needs some low mids dropped from a couple of its tracks though (guitars being the main offender), I didn't hear it until I listened to it with other devices. Suffice to say I'm kind of a fan of that mic on the snare, though it does have a very specific sound and maybe I'd be the only one.

I feel the exact same way about Chris' take on the 57. It's like, 'urgh... kinda nasty mids... that would probably work perfectly.'

And yes indeed, the i5 is rather big and kind of ideal for micing a snare with one mic.

AHA... that explains muchly about why! i didn't hear the rekkid beforehand- i'll haveta give it a whirl. i'm curious as to the whole methodology of recording blastbeaty sorta metal-- i have no worldly idea how to get that much information under control to present it in any cohesive way! yo soy retardo-anti control-ist place, i think :D. i usually end up tuning snares to sound like a 30/.06- but a fast tight snare'd be just the ticket for non splat blast beats.

i'd love to hear all those mics with different snares too- i suspect an i5 would be a PERFECT gunshot snare sorta close mic to get all the POFFFF bottom end.. it'd probably hurt! i've always been sorta meh on 57's on snare by themselves without a condenser on the bottom. nowadays, i usually end up pointing a c1000 across the snare from a pretty low angle to pickup a lot of shell ring, and leave the overheads to pick up the fundamental-- but it wouldn't EVER suit your uses, 'cause it's practically uncontrollable

Tune it tighter and you'll be singing a different... tune. :isay:

Actually I don't play fast enough to really need it to be tightly tuned on a recording... it's just a stylistic thing. Sounds like death metal that way. I could totally record myself playing the same stuff with an eighties snare sound. As for getting it under control... it's actually pretty typical, you just try to record as little bleed as possible, hope that the drummer is hitting hard, and use gates/expanders later.

All of the recordings of it you guys have heard of it were with it tuned pretty damn tight. :idk:

Alice In Chains' Dirt or Sisters Of Mercy's Floodland should be your reference for drum sounds. :red:
