HNMD! Rode NTK with a nice old t00b.
Rode NTK with a NOS Tesla 6922. And all the accessories. (Box, shockmount, PSU, cables, etc.) Ships out tomorrow morning. From what I gather the NTK is very sensitive to tube swaps, and the top end can be a love-it-or-hate-it thing. With a nice proper tube in there, it seems like it's worth a shot for making big glossysounds.

Tube mics is fancypants. Now you will have redundant stocks of them. You will be in good shape for the pants apocalypse though. The fancy ones will skyrocket in value.

EEEEeeennnteresting.
I'm curious to see what yer take on that critter is. i've thought of trying the tube route a bajillion times (especially recording gals a lot lately.. )-- but hadn't had the opprotunity.
i'd heard similarly that NTKs were sometimes super oresome, and others too bright as well.. eagerly awaiting news. ntks when they're loved seem to be decent value!
happahappanewmicday!

FedEx says this was in Maryland circa 6 AM yesterday and claims it should be here today. Took its sweet time, it did.

I want to know if you can overdrive the tube without destroying the mic.

Re: HNMD! Rode NTK with a nice old t00b.
Huh. I don't know. I suspect not as the specs say 1% THD @ 158 dB SPL. I have no fucking clue how I'd manage to get 158 dB. I brought my Shure home to make some comparison clips, and I may be recording at my friend's place tomorrow. We'll see. So I may have the opportunity to stick it on a cab or in front of a drum kit.

Re: HNMD! Rode NTK with a nice old t00b.
I mean of course, in general. But also: a cannon would probably provide the recording volumes required.

Re: HNMD! Rode NTK with a nice old t00b.
Well, that goes without saying. A round of grapeshot off the port bow, or something. Here's a test of the emergency broadcast system. Or, rather, me throwing down some halfass clip of Concrete Blonde's Bloodletting with an acoustic. NTK for both the acoustic and the vocals. Overdubbed, not at once. No compression or EQ or anything at all. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13184331/BLOODLETTING_NTK_test.mp3And with a bit of compression and EQ: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13184331/BLOODLETTING_NTK_testCOMP%2BE.mp3Waves API 550B for EQ, Waves CLA 1176 for compression.

Re: HNMD! Rode NTK with a nice old t00b.
That thing would make an epic room mic for just about anything. So natural sounding.

Re: HNMD! Rode NTK with a nice old t00b.
It's pretty spiffy sounding. Not much on the EQ on the EQ'd version; +2 dB @ 20khz on both along with a -4 low shelf @ 40hz. +2 dB @ 3khz on the acoustic, -2 @ 8khz on the vocal.
