For 80 bucks? You can flip an NT-1 for more than 80 bucks if you think it sucks.
Would I be remiss in saying the NT-1 is like the 57 of project studio LDCs? If you have it, you will probably find a use for it.

Yargh, that is what I am thinking. I am trying to get a nice-ish setup going. I enjoy the whole engineering process, though I have only dipped my feet into it a little. I think I might start offering to record local dudes' stuff for fun.

You know THE RULES, right? -You must use a cassette 4-track. -You are allowed no more than two SM57s or SM58s as your "good mics", regardless of their condition. -You may use an outboard mixer to submix, but may only record onto two tracks at once. -You may only use guitar, rehearsal PA or home stereo gear for effects.

A friend of mine had one of those fostex x-18 jobbers, and it was awesome, because every time you pressed stop then record, it changed speed. So it was completely impossible to multitrack with. Fucking brilliant.

Dudes, have you any opinions or knowledge of these mics here? (MXL 603, $89 for a pair) http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/msg/2954915062.html

Re: THE "CAMERON WANTS TO KNOW SHIT ABOUT MICROPHONES" THREA
Those are good mics, i like the 990s better(they use the same capsules and circuits inside, even though they are much different shapes). Also $90-100 is about the going rate for a pair, so it is not a crazy deal or anything. If you didn't have the 2001s and the 990 already , i would say sure, but as it is you could probably pass. Also, it only costs $100 for an actual matched pair, new, that comes with much nicer actual shock mount stand adapters, and in a nice aluminum case. The pair in this CL ad seem to just be two normal/ single mics that maybe were bought separately and might not sound quite the same as each other. If the price was more like $60 for the pair i would say do it, because they are decent cheapies, and you can also get a pair of omni capsules for them for like $45 that make them a little more flexible(though only if you have any use for omni mics!). They are decent mics. (Though like i said, The 990 is nicer, in my opinion.) For $90 though, it is slightly better than the going rate new, but nothing crazy at all.

Re: THE "CAMERON WANTS TO KNOW SHIT ABOUT MICROPHONES" THREA
Ah, okay.. I have just been daily searching CL for either a couple SDC or dynamic mics for primary use as tom mics and maybe for guitar or bass if they took to it well. I have been trying to get something together that would work well as a complicated 6 or 7 mic drum setup but also be able to record a 3 or 4 piece live band with a more simple arrangement on drums. Thought they looked intriguing, with some cool mod options. But I guess the search continues.

Re: THE "CAMERON WANTS TO KNOW SHIT ABOUT MICROPHONES" THREA
Agreed. They're alright, but easy enough to find. Sometimes you'll see the 603s as a package deal with v67gs for cheep, which is worth going for. The v67gs are nice mics, and getting essentially a free usable SDC thrown in there is not bad at all. Our Mr. Dan newholland is fond of them, as is my metal collaborator.
Are there specific mics or types of mics you're looking for, or specific applications, or just trolling for gear in general? You can definitely build yourself a pretty decent mic locker for not a whole lot if you know where to look.
Oh, and get yerself a subscription to TapeOp. Right now. It's free in the continental US.

I am not looking for anything super particular, as it is unlikely to ever show up on teh Craigslists. I just have been surfing for something that seems like a deal and would fit the appropriate task at hand (which would be addressing the tom situation and double for guitar/bass mics).
